headspace aims to reduce the burden of disease in young people aged 12-25 years caused by mental health and related substance use disorders through early identification and effective, evidence-based intervention. Services are delivered by primary care and specialist providers working together within a unified, accessible and integrated service framework.

The overall aims of clinical care within the Mobile Assessment and Treatment Team service will include:
- The early detection of those young people who are experiencing, or are at risk of early psychosis or a first episode of psychosis
- To reduce the duration of untreated psychosis in order to minimise the impact of a first episode of psychosis on the normal developmental trajectory of the young person and the impact on the family/significant others
- Intervene early and effectively with young people at risk of a first episode of psychosis to prevent the onset of psychotic illness
- To provide a responsive and seamless access to service for young people with early psychosis and first episode psychosis and their families/significant others
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
– Provide a range of comprehensive mental health assessments and clinical interventions including; mental state examinations, bio-psychosocial assessments, risk assessments, safety planning, case formulations, crisis response and the provision of home based community engagement and treatment
– Ensure delivery of high quality care based on existing evidence and EPPIC model of care in line with Australian Clinical Guidelines for Early Intervention in Psychosis
– Work collaboratively with young people, their families/significant others and relevant service systems to engage, respond and appropriately manage their mental health, developmental needs according to phase of illness within a recovery framework for first episode psychosis and those at risk of
- Approved tertiary qualifications in relevant discipline and eligibility for membership of AHPRA or the appropriate professional body
- Demonstrated experience in the mental health sector with community health experience or understanding
- Demonstrated participation in a multidisciplinary team
- Experience working with patients in an acute mental health setting
- Experience with initiating and documenting mental health and bio-psycho-social assessments, understanding of short term psychosocial treatment for young people experiencing mental health difficulties
- Demonstrable interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), problem solving, and negotiation skills
- Demonstrated ability to actively engage, collaborate and treatment plan with young people, their families and/or significant others
- Understanding of and ability to access up to date evidence based practices
- Ability and commitment to provide home/ community based acute care in settings best for engaging, collaborating and treatment planning with a young person and their family/significant others
- Knowledge and understanding of early psychosis and first episode psychosis rationale and principles, along with the developmental stages of young people and the impact that a first episode of psychosis has on a young person’s development and on the family/significant other
- Ability to be innovative in clinical approaches and engagement with young people and their families/significant others
- Ability to maintain the philosophy, standards, guidelines, policies and protocols of the EPPIC model and the organisation and to promote the early intervention and recovery of young people with a first episode of psychosis
- Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act (2007) and the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act (1998) and other relevant legislation
- Ability to use relevant Information Technology and electronic recording systems and data management tools
- Willingness and understanding of importance to engage in clinical supervision
