Viva Energy is one of Australia’s leading energy companies. Every day we help Australians reach their destinations by making, importing and delivering the fuels, lubricants, chemicals and bitumen they need to get there.
We are the exclusive Shell licensee in Australia, and supply around a quarter of Australia’s fuel through our extensive network of 1,266 service stations and through our commercial partnerships with some of Australia’s biggest companies in the aviation, marine, transport, resources, construction and manufacturing industries.
Our Geelong Refinery has been part of the local community since 1954 and is one of the largest refineries
in Australia, supplying more than half of Victoria’s fuel needs. Employing around 700 people and pumping millions of dollars into the local economy through wages and services, the Geelong Refinery is a vital part of Australia’s energy solution.
And we’ve invested in improvements, and increasing storage capacity to ensure it will continue to be an important part of local manufacturing for years to come.
The diversity of our business creates real opportunities for our people. Our people are known for achieving results, working together and outstanding customer delivery. As a company, we do this through a deep commitment to safety, care for the environment and passionate support for our local communities.
We believe great ideas come from everywhere – and everyone. We employ fantastic people who want to make a difference.
From day one you will have purposeful work, be challenged to grow, feel valued and inspired by what we deliver as a team.
Our culture encourages us to be ourselves. We believe diversity in the workplace is every bit as important as it is in everyday life and we are delighted to have been awarded the WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality for the second year running. Together we are committed to building Australia’s energy future.

Feel good about what you do
At Viva Energy, each of us has an important role to play. Our work is meaningful and matters – we help people reach their destinations! We learn and test new ideas through innovation and experimentation and our goal plans are designed to stretch us and provide growth. Our behaviours of Better Together, Deliver Amazing Results and Customer Obsessed define how we work with each other, how we think about our challenges and opportunities, and how we deliver our plans.
We have achieved some great results including acquiring Shell’s Aviation business; introducing a market-leading logistics scheduling tool; building the largest crude oil tank in Australia; launching Shell V-Power Diesel, and implemented a variety of projects to maintain and modernise our Geelong refinery.
We are proud of our commitment to our local communities where we are working to create positive social change in the areas of mental health, Indigenous participation and substance misuse.
Supporting our communities
We partner with a number of community organisations who are also making a real difference. Working with our community partners creates fantastic opportunities for people from across our organisation to have a social impact both within and outside work.
Here are just some of the community partners we support:
The Cathy Freeman Foundation – our partnership empowers young Indigenous Australians from four remote communities to stay engaged in their schooling. Nine of our employees have visited Palm Island to see the difference the Cathy Freeman Foundation are making to young Indigenous lives.
National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy (NASCA) – our partnership focuses on delivering a resilience program in Western Sydney for 100 Aboriginal students. The program supports vulnerable young people by providing study support and mentoring, with the aim of improving participation in a range of educational, recreational and cultural activities.
The Council for Aboriginal Alcohol Program Services – we support school children recovering from substance misuse issues through a numeracy and literacy program.
Headspace – our employees mentor young people and our funding provides opportunities for training and skilling sessions for young people on topics such as leadership, facilitation and mental health first aid.

And we’re proud of our work to reduce our gender pay gap and have plans to progress this even further. We have recently become sponsors of the Geelong Football Club’s inaugural AFLW team supporting women’s football, and we encourage a number of networks to further our diversity agenda, including our first LGBTIQ+ Pride Committee.

We pay competitively to attract and retain great people, including opportunities for a generous annual incentive payment and above average superannuation, plus a discount on petrol. Our Indigenous Partnerships
A significant demonstration of our commitment to strong relationships with Indigenous Australians is our Indigenous Community Partnerships. Viva Energy has provided around $3million over three years to organisations that support Indigenous programs targeted at addressing issues of substance misuse or are in line with our community program strategy.
This includes projects designed to reduce the likelihood that these issues occur, such as programs that improve educational outcomes, strengthen cultural identity or enable leadership development. We prioritise this funding to Indigenous organisations to deliver projects that meet the needs identified by Indigenous communities in the areas in which we operate. In addition to the significant and tangible benefits to Indigenous peoples participating in these programs, these partnerships have provided our staff with opportunities to improve their cultural awareness and understanding of indigenous history.
We proudly partner with a number of Indigenous Community Partners including Cathy Freeman Foundation, National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy, Koorie Heritage Trust, Council for Aboriginal Alcohol Program Services, Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Our vision for reconciliation is a nation where Indigenous peoples have equal and equitable opportunities to reach their destinations. We envisage a business and society that is enriched by their cultural diversity.
To deliver this, we launched Viva Energy’s inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan in November 2019.
