As we rapidly head towards the end of January, we also head towards that other dreaded point: back to school!

We know it can be a big downer when you’ve been living the life over the summer, hitting the beach with your mates, chilling out and not having to worry about hitting snooze on the alarm!

But getting back into the school spirit can be done. Check out our top tips below to help you beat the back-to-school blues this coming term.

11 Tips to Beat the Back-to-School Blues

One of the best ways to beat those blues is to remind yourself of all the good stuff that comes along with heading back to school (we promise there are lots!) and giving yourself some great things to look forward to.

Here are our tips to help you get started:

1. Stock up on stylish supplies.

The thought of being assigned homework again might not fill you with joy, but some brand-new stationery can definitely help to motivate you!

Who doesn’t love cracking open a new notebook and choosing their new signature pen for the year?

2. Set some goals for the term.

Think about what you’d like to achieve and change this new school term. Is there anything you want to do differently? What do you want to start doing, and what do you want to stop doing?

Write them out in your new notebook and refresh yourself throughout the term.

Don’t forget to check out some of our other great blogs about how to set successful goals this school year!

3. Make a ‘Goodbye Summer!’ checklist.

We bet there were a few things you wanted to do this summer when it started. Now you’re reaching the end, and you haven’t done them!

From checking out that new skate park or visiting a different beach, clearing out your wardrobe, updating your resume or spending some quality time with your parents – make a list of how you want to spend your time before heading back to school and end summer on a high!

4. Check in with your classmates.

It’s easy other the summer to get lost in our own worlds and forget to keep in touch with everyone, save a couple of our best mates.

Why not check in with those you haven’t heard from and make plans to catch up over lunch? Nothing better than knowing you’ve got some friendly faces waiting to hang out with when you get back to school.

5. Plan out your first week of outfits.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail and all that! Spend some time making sure your first full week of outfits are clean, ironed and ready to go.

Polish your shoes, iron your shirts and match up all your socks – you’ll definitely thank yourself for this one!

6. Prep a breakfast of champions.

A happy tummy equals a happy and switched-on mind. Don’t skip breakfast, especially this first week.

Get some fresh fruit on the go, grab some healthy cereal and a good cuppa and make sure you hit the ground running feeling fueled and fresh for the classroom.

7. Think about starting a club.

Giving yourself something to look forward to for the term ahead is a great way to get excited about returning to school. What club have you always wanted to be a part of but isn’t currently happening at school?

Whether a film or book club, board game club or table tennis – think about what you want to bring together and chat with your teachers about getting started.

8. Get ahead with your career plans.

Whether you’re entering a pivotal school year or preparing to make subject choices, getting ahead with your ideas for your potential future career is a top-notch way to feel excited about what’s to come.

You’ll find heaps of ways to do this right here at Explore Careers. You can get started by checking out our Careers Quiz, Employer Profiles, or Job board!

9. Throw a final get-together.

Bid summer holidays farewell with one final big bash! You could get all your mates together for a picnic at the park or beach, head out on a day trip, or throw an epic backyard BBQ (with parental approval, of course!).

Find a way to celebrate the summer and the return to school and make some great memories with those who matter.

How Are You Beating the Blues?

It’s normal to feel reluctant or a bit down about returning to school. It’s been a tough few years, and it’s natural to feel exhausted, especially after a nice extended break where you could finally go out and have fun! Something we’ve all missed the past couple of years.

What’s more important is to remember that these feelings are normal and they will pass – and you can help give your mindset a positive boost by focusing on all the good stuff to come.
