According to Foodbank Australia, <em>throwing away one burger <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/sites\/default\/files\/wasted-2017-report.pdf\"><em>wastes<\/em><\/a><em> the same amount of water as a 90-minute shower!!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an issue that needs to change &#8211; and our employer partner, Compass Group, is looking at the solutions.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How is Food Wasted?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To reduce food waste, it\u2019s first essential to understand how food is wasted across our communities. Foodbank Australia highlights some of the biggest contributors to food waste:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fresh produce that doesn\u2019t \u2018look\u2019 right for supermarkets is often discarded and never reaches the shelves, despite being perfectly fine for consumption.<\/li>\n<li>Packaged foods are thrown away due to damage to the packet that doesn\u2019t impact the food, such as a dent in a tin can or scratch on a cardboard packet.<\/li>\n<li>Food close to its \u2018best before\u2019 date is often removed from supermarkets or thrown away in homes, despite being within a safe \u2018use by\u2019 date.<\/li>\n<li>Families and restaurants purchasing more food than they can use before it needs to be thrown away, resulting in food waste.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/workdrive.zohopublic.com.au\/external\/06152b9ff5971843391f39fc4d32a847e56fb907c167a4a645887b0a4bc43000\">National Food Waste Strategy Feasibility Study:<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Food waste costs households between $2,000 and $2,500 per year.<\/li>\n<li>Australian households account for the majority of food waste (2.46 million tonnes)<\/li>\n<li>Of the 7.6 million tonnes of food wasted in Australia every year, over 70% of it is still perfectly edible.<\/li>\n<li>Food waste accounts for 3% of Australia\u2019s annual greenhouse gas emissions.<\/li>\n<li>25% of the water used in agriculture is used to grow wasted food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Compass Group\u2019s Stop Food Waste Campaign<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopfoodwasteday.com\/en\/index.html\">Stop Food Waste Day<\/a> is an international day of action in the fight against food waste.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2017 by Compass Group USA, suppliers, clients, colleagues and customers work together to raise awareness and inspire change around the critical issue of food waste.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, Compass Group\u2019s range of food waste management systems tracked waste in its kitchens across 26 countries, leading to a 28% reduction in food waste.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, they expanded this technology across all of Compass\u2019 44 markets, improving tracking and accountability of kitchen waste worldwide while delivering significant reductions in the Group\u2019s Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions and its clients\u2019 carbon footprint<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 2023, Compass Group are celebrating how far they\u2019ve come in six years since launching the campaign with some incredible videos from around Australia!
