NAIDOC Week<\/a> is a significant and cherished time throughout our communities, where the nation comes together to celebrate First Nations’ history, culture, and achievements.<\/p>\n This annual event, which stands for<\/a> National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, is observed in the first week of July and provides a platform for raising awareness and promoting understanding of Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n Join us as we explore this year’s theme and essential ways to engage and pay our respects this NAIDOC Week.<\/p>\n NAIDOC Week has a rich history<\/a> dates back to the early 20th century. It emerged from the Day of Mourning, which was held on the 26th of January in 1938, marking the 150th anniversary of the colonisation of Australia.<\/p>\n Aboriginal activists organised this day to protest against discriminatory treatment and injustices. Indigenous communities face.<\/p>\n In 1955, the Day of Mourning<\/a> evolved into a week-long celebration known as \u2018NAIDOC Week\u2019, initially taking place in the first week of July. The purpose was to foster unity among Indigenous peoples and promote awareness of their diverse cultures and contributions.<\/p>\n Over the years, NAIDOC Week has become integral to Australia’s cultural calendar, embracing the themes of resilience, respect, and reconciliation.<\/p>\n The 2023 National NAIDOC Week theme<\/a> is For Our Elders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n This theme highlights the significant role and prominent place that Elders hold in our communities and families across generations.<\/p>\n They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, and hard workers.<\/p>\n First Nations Elders provide guidance and support, offering wisdom in land management, cultural knowledge, justice, and human rights.
