Feeling supported, welcomed and valued for who you are and the experiences you bring to your team is crucial for not only your productivity at work but also for feeling safe.

AMS Groups dedicated First Nations Traineeships are a significant step towards ensuring First Nations young people have access to the opportunities that can help them launch a thriving career AND feel culturally safe at work.

Here’s everything you need to know about this incredible program.

First Things First: Who Are AMS Group?

AMS Group is an Australian-owned private company. We provide safe, secure, mission-critical solutions and services to government and industry.

AMSG has significant expertise in specific fields such as maritime technology, systems integration, and aviation life support systems.

They are well-equipped to handle the management, construction, and maintenance of aids to navigation networks, maritime information systems, aviation life support equipment, defence surveillance, radar systems, and overall integration of maritime assets.

AMS Groups First Nations Traineeships

AMS Group has a dedicated First Nations training program which forms part of their RAP commitment.

They proudly partner with traditional owner groups that are enthusiastic about the opportunities for the future of their peoples.

One such partnership is with the Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders-In-Council Aboriginal Corporation (MMEIC), which is a ten-year educational partnership with AMS Group, hiring four trainees each year dedicated for First Nations descendants from the Quandamooka region (Stradbroke Island).

The first intake of trainees commenced in May 2022 and enabled the candidates to have real world on water training. Trainees received a nationally recognised qualification of Master Class Five and Marine Engine Driver Level Two certification through completion of AMSA Task and Guided Study Books, as well as Radio Operators Certificate, First Aid and CPR.

Each trainee received inductions, mentoring and training from the launch masters, and members from the organisation.

The trainees completed over 120 days at sea in conjunction with competency-based training tasks and assessments. Once the trainees were deemed competent, they were promoted into full-time Deckhand positions and given the opportunity to drive marine vessels up to 24 metres in length, and act as either Chief Mate or Deck Watch Keeper on vessels up to 35 metres in size.

First Nations training program provides valuable, practical experience to further our employee’s skills and continue to grow meaningful, successful and rewarding careers.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for First Nations Trainees at AMSG?

The second-year intake of four First Nations trainees is rotating across the Logistics, Asset & Infrastructure and Aviation departments to learn a variety of skillsets with on-the-job mentoring and training.

They’ll also gain qualifications such as Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card), Forklift Licence, Working Safely at Heights and Tower Rescue, First Aid and CPR.
