A Look at the 2024 Report

Last week, something pretty significant happened: the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) shared gender pay gap info for almost 5,000 private companies.

This was a critical new report, thanks to new legislation about how employers report their data and who has to reveal all!

The results? They’re pretty eye-opening 👀

Let’s take a look at this year’s report!

First off, who is the WGEA?

Well, they’re the Workplace Gender Equality Agency.

Their job is to promote and improve gender equality in Australian workplaces. Basically, they’re all about ensuring everyone gets a fair go at work, regardless of gender.

According to the latest data, WGEA advises:

“Australia’s total remuneration average gender pay gap is 21.7%. For every $1 on average a man makes, women earn 78c. Over the course of a year, that difference adds up to $26,393.”

Thanks to new rules made in 2023, companies with more than 100 employees are legally required to publish their gender pay gap.

Most of these companies already knew their gender pay gaps for over a decade, but now everyone else can see them. This push for transparency came because these companies needed to do more to close the gap.

The numbers might not tell the whole story. They don’t show things like the number of men or women working at these companies or their hours. But they do give us a clue about how fair these workplaces are when it comes to gender equality.

Think of the report as a big check-up on how fair things are in the workplace regarding pay.

It looks at things like how much men and women get paid for doing the same job and if there are any gaps between them.

So, what did the report find? Well, it tells us if there’s still a gap between men’s and women’s pay.

It’s like shining a light on any unfairness that might be happening in the workplace:

Some companies had the chance to explain their gender pay gap and what they’re doing about it, but only 13 did.

It’s pretty telling when big companies with big pay gaps stay quiet.

Who are WGEA?
