We recognise that the transport network is a public space that contributes to healthy, sustainable and liveable communities.<\/p>\n<p>On 1 July 2019, VicRoads and Public Transport Victoria came together with the Department of Transport to create a properly integrated transport department \u2013 in step with other global cities.<\/p>\n<p>The new Department of Transport and Planning gives us a singular, integrated focus on tackling the big issues. The integrated Department of Transport and Planning plans and operates transport in a way that matches the people and products that travel on it \u2013 focusing on the destination, rather than which mode we use.<\/p>\n<p>Our integrated approach ensures we are able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>respond much faster \u2013 and give people the information they need \u2013 to make the best travel choices, especially around major network disruptions<\/li>\n<li>make better use of existing road and rail, shifting more journeys onto rail and prioritising public transport on roads<\/li>\n<li>respond much quicker to innovation and new transport technologies<\/li>\n<li>take a holistic view in planning for the future, to meet demand for more than 23 million journeys a day and a tripling of freight by 2050<\/li>\n<li>partner with others to address a range of issues, from safety to reducing environmental impacts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The new Department\u2019s structure reflects the importance of working with the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority.
