Do You Want to Study Smarter, Not Harder? 11 Hacks to Keep You Focused!

Is the new school year already getting away from you? Feeling a bit lost about how to level up your study game?

Leidos has the tips, tricks and hacks to help you get – and stay – on track this year.

11 Secret Sauce Study Tips For Success

Studying effectively in high school can set a strong foundation for your future academic pursuits – and can also support you once you enter the world of work.

Some of these tips might seem like common sense, but it’s often the simple habits that create the best results:

1. Understand the Content

Spend the time in class to listen to your teacher and remain focused to understand the content. If you don’t understand something, ask questions to clarify and solidify your understanding.

 2. Organise Your Time

Create a study schedule that allocates enough time for each subject. Prioritise tasks and set realistic goals. Break your study sessions into smaller, focused blocks of time with short breaks in between to maintain concentration. Use a calendar to allocate time daily and weekly to each subject and task.

3. Stay Healthy

Get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise regularly. A healthy body supports a healthy mind.

 4. Take Breaks

Ensure you include study breaks every 60-90 minutes to help maintain your productivity, motivation and focus most effectively. Take 5-10 minutes to get up and stretch or go for a short walk around the block.

5. Create a Dedicated Study Space

Find a quiet, comfortable place free from distractions where you can focus on your studies. Remove distractions, including your phone, and only check it during study breaks.

6. Use Active Learning

Instead of passively reading, engage with the material by taking notes, summarising, asking questions, or teaching the content to someone else.

7. Use Study Aids

Utilise study aids like flashcards, online resources, and study groups to reinforce your learning.

8. If You’re Feeling Stuck

Remove yourself from the environment. A short break away from the desk can help you think about a problem differently. This could be a walk or some form of exercise. It might be eating fresh fruit or vegetables or splashing your face with cold water.

9. Seek Help When Needed

Don’t hesitate to ask teachers, tutors, or classmates for help with difficult subjects or topics.

10. Practice Past Exams

Review past exam papers and practice answering questions to understand what to expect.

11. Stay Motivated

Set clear goals and remind yourself why you’re studying. Reward yourself for achieving milestones.

And One Final Important Tip: Be Kind to Yourself

If you don’t do well in an assignment or test, it’s natural to feel disappointed. However, try to learn from the experience.

Spend time reflecting on what you could do better next time. Remain positive – resilience and persistence are crucial to being successful.
