Most people think accounting is all about spreadsheets, calculators and endless numbers. But for Karen, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
As a Senior Consultant in BDO Melbourne’s Global Expatriate and Employment Taxation team, Karen spends her days solving problems, working with clients and learning about industries she never expected to be part of.
‘Sure, there are numbers involved,’ she says, ‘but accounting is really about solving real-world problems. We look for risks before they become issues, make sense of information and explain it clearly so clients can make the right decisions.’
Finding Her Path
Karen’s love of business started early. ‘I’ve always enjoyed accounting and business subjects,’ she says. ‘So when it came time to pick a degree, it was an easy choice.’
She studied Accounting at Monash University and, during her final year, wanted to see what life in the industry was actually like. ‘Studying is one thing, but working in the field is completely different,’ she explains. ‘I chose a unit that included an internship, which led me to BDO’s vacationer program – and that’s where everything clicked.’
That short program opened the door to a full-time role. ‘From there, the rest is history,’ she smiles.
More Than Just Maths
One of the biggest misconceptions about accounting, according to Karen, is that you have to be obsessed with numbers. ‘People think you need to love maths, but it’s not really like that,’ she says. ‘Accounting is about people, communication and understanding how businesses work.’
Her job involves helping clients navigate complex situations and find practical solutions. ‘Sometimes we even get to go out and work directly with clients, which is a great way to see how different industries operate,’ she says. ‘That variety keeps it interesting.’
Karen also loves how technology is changing the field. ‘We’re already using AI tools at BDO to work more efficiently,’ she says. ‘It’s exciting to see how fast things are evolving. I’m really curious to see where the industry will be in a few years.’
Karen’s Advice for Students
When it comes to thinking about your future, Karen’s advice is refreshingly down to earth.
‘Don’t stress if you don’t have it all figured out yet,’ she says. ‘You’re young and you have time. Use this stage to explore what interests you. The more you learn about yourself now, the easier it’ll be to find a career that actually fits.’
For Karen, curiosity was what opened the door – and it’s what continues to drive her success today.
