Inspiring the Next Generation of Energy Experts

Powering the Future: How Students Got a First-Hand Look at Energy Careers with Powerlink

Ever wondered what it’s like to help power an entire state? For a group of Queensland students, that’s exactly what they found out during their school holidays, thanks to Powerlink’s hands-on work experience program.

Across Brisbane and Townsville, 19 students took part in placements that gave them a front-row seat to one of Australia’s most exciting industries: energy. From exploring energy projects to meeting real engineers, each student got to see how science, technology and teamwork come together to keep Queensland switched on.

Getting a Taste of Real Engineering

In Brisbane, eight students joined Powerlink through its partnership with Queensland University of Technology’s Power of Engineering Program. Their week was filled with practical activities, insights from real engineers and a deeper look into the world of STEM careers.

Two more students joined through Powerlink’s partnership with the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF). Their placement focused on Indigenous Governance, Policy and Cultural Heritage, showing how cultural knowledge and modern infrastructure can work hand in hand to shape a more inclusive energy future.

Hands-On Learning in Townsville

Up north, Powerlink’s CopperString Project Team gave nine students the chance to get up close with some of Queensland’s biggest energy projects.

They met Civil and Electrical Engineers, toured worksites and visited the CopperString Experience Centre, Ross River Substation and other infrastructure that keeps communities connected. For many, it was their first time seeing what a career in the energy industry actually looks like.

Why Experiences Like This Matter

Work experience at Powerlink isn’t just about observing, it’s about exploring real career options and discovering what you’re capable of.

These programs help students uncover pathways they might not have known existed, from engineering and environmental science to project management and cultural heritage. It’s a chance to ask questions, try new things and learn from the people shaping the future of energy in Queensland.

One of the best parts is the Powerlink team’s commitment to mentoring young people. They take pride in sharing their knowledge, building confidence and showing students what’s possible when you bring passion and curiosity to the table.

How to Get Involved

If you’re curious about energy, STEM or sustainability, Powerlink’s work experience placements are the perfect place to start.

Programs usually run twice a year during the first week of the winter and spring school holidays in Queensland, with opportunities available in Brisbane and Townsville.

You can explore careers in areas like:

  • Engineering (civil, electrical, environmental)
  • Indigenous Relations and Cultural Heritage
  • STEM and corporate pathways

Some placements are designed to support Powerlink’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, helping more women and First Nations students gain experience in the industry.

While Powerlink can’t offer trade-based apprenticeships, students interested in electrical or communications careers can still gain valuable insight by shadowing engineers and project specialists.
