Starting your first job usually comes with a side of nerves. For Pranaya, a Front of House team member at Roll’d Broadway, the challenge wasn’t just the fast pace—it was a menu she knew almost nothing about.
We caught up with Pranaya to chat about how she went from total menu newbie to customer-pro, and why her team at Roll’d is the reason she actually looks forward to her shifts.
Settling in (and ditching the nerves)
“When I first started, I was definitely a bit nervous because it was such a new environment,” Pranaya says. But those first-day jitters didn’t last long. “The team was so welcoming and supportive, which made it easy to settle in. My advice to anyone starting tomorrow would be the same: don’t be scared. You’ll feel comfortable sooner than you think.”
A team that has your back
It’s one thing to work together, but it’s another to actually enjoy the people you’re on shift with. For Pranaya, the culture at Roll’d is built on more than just making rice paper rolls.
“Everyone is genuinely supportive, and you feel like you’re part of a team from day one,” she explains. “We have team meetings with icebreakers and activities, which helps everyone get to know each other and build genuine friendships. Even during the busiest shifts, everyone stays respectful and communicates well.”
From ‘Menu Newbie’ to Expert
One of the biggest hurdles for Pranaya was the food itself. Coming into the role, she wasn’t familiar with Vietnamese cuisine or the Roll’d menu.
“At the start, taking orders was a bit tricky. I went from not knowing the menu to practically memorising it. Now I’m confident giving recommendations to customers. It’s been really rewarding seeing how far I’ve come and being able to share that knowledge.”
Skills for the future
For Pranaya, the best part of the job isn’t just the flexibility (which makes juggling high school way easier) or the staff-discounted meals—it’s the confidence boost she’s picked up along the way.
Whether she’s staying calm during a lunch rush or communicating with a new customer, she’s building a foundation for whatever career comes next. “It’s a great opportunity to build real skills you can add to your resume,” she says. “Plus, you leave with experience and a full stomach.”
