The Rise of Women in Trucks – And Why You Should Pay Attention

“It’s a boy’s job.” You’ve probably heard something like that before. Women across CMV Group are proving it wrong every single day.

Not everyone wants to sit behind a desk. For a lot of young women, working with their hands, solving real problems, and seeing what they’ve built at the end of a shift is way more satisfying than any office job. No two days look the same, the pay is strong, and you don’t need any experience to get started. What matters most is curiosity and a willingness to give things a go.

What’s it actually like?

You’ll work on real vehicles, learn skills most people never pick up, and be part of a team that has your back. There’s a lot of support, especially early on.

“Everyone is so willing to help. Even when I make a mistake, people are nice and want to help me learn.”— Baylee

“The environment is so encouraging. No task is too big for a female.”— Mariah

“The biggest surprise was the support from the guys in the workshop.” — Kiara

Can you build a real career from this?

An apprenticeship is just the starting point. From there, you can move into specialist technical roles, mentor other apprentices, or work toward leadership. Skilled technicians are always in demand, the pay reflects that, and you earn while you learn with no uni required.

Ellemae wasn’t expecting “the robots, other females who do the job, and above-award wages” when she started out. Now she wouldn’t trade it.

Is it for you?

Walking into a male-dominated workshop can feel daunting at first. CMV Group’s apprentices are honest about that. But it doesn’t take long to find your feet.

“It’s a bit intimidating at first, but once you get to know everyone, they’re super nice. Having other girls in the workshop makes it much easier.”

— Baylee

“If you like a challenge and want to prove yourself, it’s worth it. There are tough days, but there are many days you’ll thrive.”

— Ellemae

“You gain friendships like no other. The guys will banter, but they always have your back.”

— Kiara

“It teaches you that you are mentally stronger than you think. Sometimes your mind is all that’s stopping you.”

— Mariah

A Day in the Life

Eve’s story

Eve works as a technician at CMV Group’s workshop. Her day looks nothing like you might expect.

How the day runs

She arrives 15 minutes early, dons her PPE, and checks in with her supervisor to receive her job assignment. Tasks are prioritised by urgency, but if nothing’s pressing, she gets to choose what to work on next. Everyone’s treated the same. The day has a good rhythm: a mid-morning breakfast break, lunch with the team, and supervisors checking in throughout. By the end of the shift, tools are packed away, and there’s a real sense of having done something.

The skills you pick up

Eve came in with no mechanical background. Through the pre-delivery department, she’s learned vehicle inspections, basic mechanical and electrical systems, how to use tools safely, and how to problem-solve on the fly. Time management, communication, knowing when to ask for help, it all comes with the job.

What surprised her most

How much detailed work happens inside a truck’s cab without ever fully pulling it apart? Stripping components, fitting accessories, wiring, modifications, then reassembling everything so neatly you’d never know it had been touched. The precision was unexpected. “Every detail matters,” she says, and that attention to detail has become something she takes real pride in.

What it’s like being a woman in the workshop

Positive. Eve feels like an equal member of the team, doing the same tasks, held to the same standard, and supported when she needs it. Skills and work ethic are what get respected here.

The part no one tells you about

Seeing the finished trucks out on the road. Knowing she worked on vehicles now being driven by real customers, and being able to point that out to friends and family. “People don’t realise how much skill and effort go into each one,” she says. That pride often catches people off guard.
