Meet Nenna, Chief Scientist in Haematology 

Nenna is a Chief Scientist in Haematology at one of Healius’ pathology laboratories and has spent more than 40 years working in the profession. 

We asked Nenna what she enjoys most about working as a Medical Scientist in pathology, what makes Haematology so interesting and what advice she’d give students considering a similar career. 

1. For students who may never have heard of Haematology before, what is it and why is it important? 

Haematology is the study of blood and blood disorders. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients around the body, helps fight infection and plays a vital role in preventing bleeding. 

In the laboratory we analyse blood samples to help diagnose and monitor a wide range of conditions, from anaemia and infections through to blood cancers such as leukaemia and clotting disorders. Every day the results we produce help doctors make important decisions about diagnosis, treatment and patient care. 

What I find fascinating about Haematology is that a small blood sample can tell us so much about what’s happening inside a person’s body. It’s like solving a puzzle where every result provides another clue about a patient’s health. 

2. What do you enjoy most about your role as a Medical Scientist? 

What I enjoy most is knowing that the work we do has a direct impact on patient care, even though we often work behind the scenes. 

Every day is different. I enjoy the scientific challenge of interpreting results, solving problems and working with a highly skilled team of scientists, technicians and medical specialists. 

I also love that pathology is continually evolving. During my career I have seen enormous advances in technology, automation and diagnostic testing. There is always something new to learn which keeps the work interesting and rewarding. 

I have also enjoyed the opportunities extended to me to manage and lead my team 

3. What advice would you give a high school student considering a career as a Scientist in pathology? 

If you enjoy science, are naturally curious and like solving problems I would strongly encourage you to explore pathology as a career. 

Focus on building a good foundation in subjects such as biology, chemistry and mathematics, but don’t worry if you don’t know exactly what area of science you want to pursue. Many students discover pathology only after they start their tertiary pathway. 

My advice is to stay curious, ask questions and be open to opportunities. Pathology is a profession where you never stop learning. It combines science, technology and healthcare in a way that allows you to make a real difference to people’s lives. 

Most importantly, remember that not all healthcare careers involve working directly with patients. As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, you can have a significant impact on patient outcomes while working in a highly specialised scientific environment. It’s a rewarding career that offers excellent opportunities for growth, specialisation and leadership. 

After more than 40 years in the profession, I can honestly say that choosing pathology was one of the best decisions I ever made. 

What Do You Need to Study? 

The most common pathway to becoming a Medical Laboratory Scientist in Australia is completing an AIMS-accredited (Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists) degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Science or Laboratory Medicine. 

Examples include: 

  • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, Griffith University 
  • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) 
  • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Pathology), Charles Sturt University 
  • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, Curtin University 
  • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, University of Tasmania 

Many courses include professional placement opportunities, giving students hands-on experience in real laboratory environments before they graduate.

Other Career Paths in Pathology 

A career in pathology doesn’t have to follow one set path. 

Many professionals begin in pathology collection or laboratory support roles before progressing into positions such as Technician, Scientist, Senior Scientist and Chief Scientist. 

There are also opportunities to move into laboratory management and leadership roles, including positions involving quality systems and accreditation. 

For those interested in pursuing a career in medicine, pathology also offers pathways to become a specialist doctor such as a Pathologist or Haematologist. These professionals complete a medical degree followed by advanced specialist training and are qualified to diagnose disease and provide clinical oversight of pathology services.
