For Ethan Vong, a career in technology isn’t about staring at code all day. It’s about building things that make life easier for people and businesses.
“Imagine you and your friends are building a LEGO castle,” he says. “One wants a drawbridge, one wants a moat, someone else wants a tower. My job is to help everyone agree on the design and figure out how to make it happen.”
That’s how Ethan explains consulting, and it’s not far from what he does every day as a Data and AI Consultant at Capgemini, helping organisations use technology and data to solve real-world problems.
Getting Started and Finding His Feet
Like many graduates, Ethan didn’t have a clear picture of what consulting actually meant until he joined Capgemini. “You don’t really learn consulting at uni,” he says. “But Capgemini made sure we had everything we needed to get started.”
Before day one, Ethan was paired with a buddy who helped him navigate those first few weeks. “It made the first day so much easier,” he says. “You never feel like you’re walking in blind.”
From there, the learning came fast. The graduate program began with interactive sessions on teamwork, communication, and time management – skills that turn theory into practice. Then came the Invent Institute, an eleven-week experience where graduates work together on real projects, building both technical knowledge and confidence along the way.
“There’s a lot of support,” Ethan says. “You’ve got mentors, project leads, and other grads who are always happy to help. You’re encouraged to ask questions and learn from everyone around you.”
Life in Data and AI
Working in Data and AI means every day is different. Some weeks Ethan helps a client design smarter data systems, while other times he’s exploring how artificial intelligence can automate repetitive tasks and free up time for creative work.
“It’s never boring,” he says. “You’re always learning new tools, experimenting, and finding better ways to solve problems.”
His biggest advice for anyone starting out in tech is simple: stay curious.
“Data and AI evolve every single day. Even when you’re busy, keep learning and exploring what’s new. The more you understand what’s changing, the more valuable you become.”
Why Capgemini Felt Like the Right Fit
When Ethan first started researching graduate opportunities, Capgemini quickly caught his attention. “I saw it ranked as the number one graduate employer and wanted to know why,” he says.
After meeting people from the team, it all made sense. “Everyone was approachable and genuinely passionate about helping grads grow. That’s exactly what I found once I joined. The culture here is friendly, collaborative, and supportive. You never feel like you have to figure things out on your own.”
For Ethan, that combination of technical challenge and people-first culture makes all the difference. “You don’t just learn skills here. You find people who believe in you, and that makes the work meaningful.”
