Hear From Our People
Landing a role in the tax team has allowed me to pursue my passion for both law and commerce”
Emily, 2024 Graduate in Tax Rotation Program (Tax division).
At uni, I enjoyed applying my analytical mind in pursuit of my Law degree and developing my commercial and financial acumen through my Commerce degree. From the very beginning of my uni studies, I knew my ideal career would be one that would allow me to pursue my passion for both. My journey with KPMG began in my pre-penultimate year when I joined the KPMG Foundations program, a one day event where I learned more about the firm, the areas of work and the culture. I was then fast-tracked for an interview for the KPMG Vacationer program. My interview was for a career path I hadn’t previously considered as I was still early in my degree – Tax. At the end of the Vacationer program, I was directly offered a graduate role, which took the pressure off needing to secure a graduate role during my final year at uni – it was all sorted in the first semester!
Tax has been such a great area to work in – it combines my degrees perfectly. From day one I’ve been involved in real client work, advising clients on a diverse range of tax issues. I get to apply my legal research skills and understanding of the law to write client advice. It’s great to do this real work alongside a wonderful and friendly team who are more than happy to share their knowledge base and expertise with me.
Audit has such strong processes that it’s a brilliant choice for starting your career”
Kelsey, 2023 Graduate in External Audit (Audit division)
What I loved when I started as a graduate (and still love 2.5 years later!) is that every audit follows a clear procedure. Early in your career, it’s hard to know where to start and exactly what to do but audit has such strong processes. I’ve had the chance to learn how different sections of an audit file work and how they fit into the bigger picture. Now that I’m an assistant manager, I lead on smaller audits so that experience of all the different sections means I can support all my colleagues with their work. It’s a great feeling to help my team.
My team is such an important part of the work. I’ve been focused on property and real estate audits, and part of our job is doing site visits – seeing capital expenditure projects like an office building renovation or an indoor urban farm in real life and speaking to my clients to understand their business processes really solidified my understanding of the numbers we’re working on. It was also great to do those business trips with my team and build a relationship with them.
Accounting was always what I wanted to do and I paired my Commerce degree with a Masters in Business Analytics and Big Data. My advice for students thinking about whether Audit is right for them is to give it a go and remember that everyone will know you’re learning – it’s perfectly set up to build your skills with an experienced and friendly team around you to help you learn.
Focussing on my favourite subjects at uni and my strengths is how I found an exciting new career.”
Britt, 2024 Graduate in Transformational Change (Consulting division), 4x Olympian and World Champion.
When I decided to retire from my career as a professional mogul skier, I wasn’t quite sure what to do. I’d been studying for my Bachelor of Communications (PR and Journalism) at Griffith University, and I spoke to my university coordinator for help finding a new road. Going into the discussion with her, I did some thinking about my strengths and what I enjoyed most in my degree. A strength of mine is problem solving, which I think comes from my time as an athlete where I had to focus on areas I could make an impact. My favourite subjects were crisis communication and organisational psychology. Her suggestion was to try consulting, so I could work on problem solving in these areas across different industries and with other specialisations.
That’s exactly what’s happened so far in my graduate year; I’ve already worked with several different clients and with other specialist teams at KPMG. It has been a great introduction into transformational change with a brilliant team who support me. We all bring different strengths and it really does feel like no matter what level you’re at, you have an important part to play.
My advice to students who are thinking about where to next is to seek out people who already work in the area or areas you’re interested in. Ask them targeted questions about their day-to-day – what’s required, the challenges, the wins they’ve had and for examples. Those examples can help you see if their work is something that you can see yourself being excited by.
Make the move and take the leap!”
Su Paranamanage, 2024 Graduate in Business Tax Advisory team (Enterprise Division)
I wasn’t sure how I’d go moving to Townsville for uni. I’m from the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo – a huge, busy city – so moving to a regional city was a big change for me. My brother thought I’d last a year!
I started my Commerce degree and as the time went on, Townsville really grew on me. So much so that as I got closer to the end of my degree, I didn’t want to leave!
I took on an Undergraduate role with KPMG while I was still studying and was then offered a graduate role, so I didn’t even need to go job hunting. I really haven’t looked back since then. Getting to work with this team, it’s something special. I’m in the Business Tax Advisory team and the opportunities have been so diverse. I’ve worked on asset management with engineers, with healthcare consultants on a hospital project, just to name a few. It has been great to try lots of different things and stay in Townsville.
Everything is within 20 minutes when you live in Townsville, so my commute is very easy which means I have lots more time for my hobbies and study – I’ve been working towards my Chartered Accountant certification through KPMG and I’ve already completed half of it. Having that extra time has really made a difference!
It has been a great start to my career – a supportive team and interesting work, all right here in my new home.

KPMG Graduate Careers – Start Something Big
Cultural Diversity
KPMG Australia has team members from around the world, with a rich environment of ethnic, religious and cultural diversity and languages. This brings together a wealth of skills, experiences and perspectives that makes KPMG not only a great place to work, but also provides a diversity of innovations and resources for our clients.
We’re strengthening our focus on cultural diversity at leadership levels, creating career development opportunities, recognising the importance of role models from different backgrounds and building our cultural IQ across the firm. We hold forum events across the country to create opportunities for everyone to share stories about their cultural identity, as well as offering facilities for our people to engage in prayer and quiet contemplation during the working day and cultural/religious leave.
People with Disability
We’re committed to extending opportunities to people with a disability to thrive and be embraced in a barrier-free workplace. This is integral to our commitment towards building inclusive work practices. Here are some of the ways we do that:
In June 2024 we launched our second Access and Inclusion Plan (AIP), developed in collaboration with the Australian Disability Network and drawing on internal feedback. This three-year plan is an evolution of the work started in our first plan and accelerates the removal of barriers impacting our people with disability. It focuses on improving the accessibility of end-to-end recruitment processes, uplifting the career development of people with disability, a multi-year approach to enhancing the accessibility of our technology and deepening our relationships with clients to progress disability inclusion across corporate Australia.
EMBRACE@KPMG – an active team of engaged and passionate advocates who work to increase the visibility of disability and inclusive leadership across the firm. In April 2024 our Embrace network also received finalist recognition as the best employee network at the Australian Network of Disability Awards. Our Partner sponsor and leaders are committed to advocating and creating positive change.
Progressing our efforts to be an employer champion for people with disabilities – by enabling accessibility through workplace adjustments and technology updates.
Neurodiverse recruitment – To build a capability and understanding around neurodiversity in the workplace, we have partnered with Untapped to roll out neurodiversity education for our People & Inclusion Business partners, the Talent Attraction team and the Real Peers Network.
Gender Diversity
We know the key to parity is to improve the number of women in leadership roles, so we’re investing in programs that develop female talent and leadership capability.
Our Targeted talent programs – involve senior team members sponsoring future female leaders. This has run for more than five years and successfully developed hundreds of women leaders.
A Future Leaders program – was recently introduced to support the progress of up-and-coming females. ‘In her Hands” – our first junior women’s network that creates space for women to share experiences and challenges within the corporate environment. In her Hands allows women to find their voice, their tribe and their confidence in the value they bring to the firm.
Women in partnership target – we aim to have 40 percent women in partnership by 2025. In meeting this target, we strive for a 40:40:20 gender balance in partnership – 40% men, 40% women and 20% all genders (which can include men, women and non-binary people).
We have a longstanding commitment to gender equity and reducing the gender pay gap (GPG). Currently, our performance is:
Employee gender pay gap – Our WGEA Employee Average Base Salary GPG is 10%. This is an improvement on last year, when our WGEA Employee Average Base Salary GPG was 10.5%. (Employee Average Base Salary GPG is the percentage difference between the average base salary of FTE male staff to the average base salary of FTE female staff.)
Partner gender pay gap – 13.16%.
LGBTIQ+
Our commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion is underpinned by KPMG’s Global LGBTQ+ Inclusion statement, signalling our collective commitment to drive progress. It includes meaningful and sustainable actions that create a safe, diverse and inclusive workplace.
Here are some of the ways we do that:
Pride@KPMG – our employee network for LGBTQ+ employees and allies. It has been going strong for over 10 years. Providing opportunities for LGBTQ+ people and allies to connect and learn through regular events like IDAHOBIT and Wear it Purple as well as fundraising activities for community organisations such as Black Rainbow and Qlife.
Through the Pride for Women Network – Pride@KPMG is committed to raising the visibility of LGBTQ+ women.
Our Trans and Gender Diverse Network – is committed to creating better workplace support for trans and gender diverse people.
Leading with Pride – KPMG’s LGBTQ+ talent development program available to managers and above who identify as LGBTQ+. The 6-month program focuses on providing authentic leadership skills to help create the LGBTQ+ KPMG leaders of tomorrow.
Our Gender Affirmation policy – provides leave and benefits for trans employees who are affirming their gender as well as information for leaders and colleagues about how to support someone who is affirming their gender.
ACON’s Pride in Diversity program – we are a founding member and have participated in the Australian Workplace Equality Index for many years, a benchmarking tool for LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace. In 2022, KPMG was awarded Gold Employer tier in the AWEI, and Pride@KPMG won Network of the Year.
First Nations
We have a long and proud history working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Communities. And, in 2021, our third ‘Elevate’ Reconciliation Action Plan launched.
By building a culturally safe and informed workplace, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues can grow their careers with us through creating a culturally safe workplace. We do this through:
A Cultural Safety Action Plan: developed in response to the findings of a cultural safety maturity assessment, led by an external Indigenous consultancy.
Arrilla Digital Cultural Awareness training – mandatory for all Australian employees, to help improve their cultural and historical awareness.
Indigenous Tertiary Scholarships – inspiring and supporting future Indigenous talent through selected universities.
The CareerTrackers Indigenous Internship Program – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students can receive paid internship opportunities with us.
The KPMG Indigenous Network (KIN) – provides a safe space where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues meet regularly to connect, share and celebrate. The KIN also provides input into policies and strategic documents that will impact Indigenous Peoples and Communities.
Indigenous Cultural and Ceremonial leave – an extra paid day of leave for Indigenous employees to participate in a significant culture, ceremonial or community events.
In July 2021, Djiribul woman and KPMG Partner Shelley Reys AO became the first Indigenous Australian to be elected to our Board.
