From Fleet Controller to Regional Manager

Scott

Scott’s first role with Northline was as Fleet Controller in Brisbane. He was referred to Northline by a colleague while working as a local Pickup and Delivery (PUD) driver. He had an unquenchable thirst for understanding how things work and because of this, found himself making multiple lateral movements early in his career, including working with Pallet/Equipment Control, Linehaul/PUD Forklift operations and data entry in Warehouse.

Scott was later promoted to Warehouse Manager at the Brisbane Depot, a role he performed for 5 years before taking on a secondment role as Depot Manager. After his secondment, Scott made various lateral career movements through business improvement projects across Operations. He later took on the role of Contracts Manager to look after major mining and construction customers in North Queensland, before being promoted permanently to Depot Manager, Brisbane – then further vertical steps to Brand Manager – Brisbane, State Manager – Queensland and Regional Manager – Queensland.

From Graduate to Project Management Office Manager

Profile Picture of Interviewee

Mignon joined Northline in 2000 as a graduate after completing a degree in Commerce. Following the successful completion of her graduate program, Mignon was appointed to an Internal Sales Administration role. Mignon continued to work in the Administration function, and with multiple lateral movements, experienced variety in her work through exposure to different functions such as Warehouse.

Motivated by a sense of contributing to the organisation’s success, Mignon’s journey has been fluid, following new opportunities that presented themselves as Northline has grown. With hands-on experience in Northline’s core processes, Mignon has been able to support key projects including the centralisation of rate reviews and Sales reporting, the implementation of the S2 system, formalising a customer onbarding process, and the introduction of scanning freight at Northline. In 2022, Mignon made a vertical career step into a people leader position, appointed Manager of the newly formed Project Management Office.

An early career in IT Business Systems

Chanuka Northline

Chanuka joined Northline in May 2022 on a short-term student placement while completing a degree in IT. Chanuka loved the culture at Northline and the experience that he had on the Business Systems project – so much so that he applied (successfully) for a vacancy in the Customer Service team were he continued to work part-time while completing his studies.

While working as a valued member of the Customer Service team, Chanuka expressed interest for future positions within the Business Systems team – aiming to stay at Northline while pursuing a career in IT/Business Systems. Soon after completing his degree, Chanuka made a lateral transition, appointed to the position of Integration Officer, Business Systems. Initially Chanuka worked in a dual role with his position in Customer Service before transitioning permanently to the Business Systems team in January 2024.

From PUD Driver to Depot Manager

Profile Picture of Interviewee

Laura’s first role with Northline was as a Pickup and Delivery (PUD) driver in Alice Springs. A vacancy became available in the Administration, and soon after, commenced as Administration Support Officer. Laura then took on a secondment as Administration Manager while the current Administration Manager went on Parental leave – this later turned into a permanent role for Laura.

Considering opportunities at other locations within Northline, Laura moved to Townsville, taking on the Administration Manager role at the Townsville depot. Having demonstrated initiative and leadership in this role, when returning to work from her own Parentaal Leave, Laura applied for, and was successful in being appointed to Depot Manager, Townsville – a big vertical step.

From Graduate to Afternoon Shift Operations Supervisor

Profile Picture of Interviewee

Tash joined the business in 2023 as part of Northline’s Graduate Program. With prior experience in the Transport and Logistics industry and a degree in Accounting, Tash hoped that the Graduate Program would enhance his personal and professional growth.

Find out how Tash found the program and what he’s up to now.

At the start of the program, you were most looking forward to getting experience in Finance. Did this end up being your favourite rotation?

Initially, I was most interested in Finance as I studied Accounting at university and I like numbers. However, I actually found that I enjoyed my operational rotations the most. I already have workplace experience within Operations and during my time on the program, I learnt that I was still able to use the analytical skills that I learnt during my degree. I felt that an operational role would be the best pathway for my career within the Logistics industry. I enjoy the fast-paced aspects of the department, solving problems and doing something different every day.

Can you describe your new role?

As soon as I finished the Graduate Program, I was appointed to the role of Operations Support Officer. It is a national role involving a lot of travel, mainly to Sydney and Melbourne. My exposure to all departments across Northline made me a strong candidate for this role because I was able to go to any depot and support them in whatever way they needed. I especially enjoyed my time helping with our recent move in Sydney from Wetherill Park to St Marys.

However, at the beginning of June, I made the decision to relocate full-time to Sydney. Northline offered me a huge opportunity to progress my career and I took on the role of PM Operations Supervisor. I didn’t realise at the time but assisting with the depot move was an excellent transition and meant that I was able to become part of the Sydney team and connect with the crew over there before undertaking this role.

In this role I will be overseeing afternoon operations in Sydney, leading the Forklift Operators and General Hands to efficiently load and unload freight. I am very excited about this opportunity and know that I will be supported every step of the way.

From Graduate to National HSEQ and Compliance Officer

Having recently completed Northline’s 2023 Graduate Program and now employed as a National HSEQ and Compliance Officer for Northline, Tristan shares what it was like to be a graduate at Northline…

You said you were most looking forward to your Finance and Sales rotations. Did this turn out to be the case?

I enjoyed both rotations but especially Sales. I loved building relationships with our customers. And actually, during the Graduate Program, I learnt that one of my biggest strengths is my ability to problem solve. I enjoyed finding the best solutions for each customer, based on their needs. Being part of the Internal Sales team itself was great. I found them to be the tightest team and they operate so well as a unit, it was very impressive.

With my Customer Service and Sales background, I knew I would enjoy those rotations to some extent but I certainly didn’t start the program thinking that I’d end up in Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ)!

A big part of the Graduate Program is learning to become flexible and adaptable, especially in such a fast-moving industry. And because of that, I had the opportunity to spend more time in HSEQ which really solidified that the department was the right fit for me.

Can you describe your new role as National HSEQ and Compliance Officer?

Within this role, every day is different. I could be looking out for the health and wellbeing of Northline employees, checking the way we operate complies with current laws or even to monitoring our environmental impacts. There are so many different facets to the role. It appeals to me because it’s a continuous improvement as opposed to ticking items off a list. In this position, I feel like I have the opportunity to help move the business forward.

Getting this role was a “sliding doors moment”. I had recently completed my HSEQ rotation and expressed my interest in choosing the department as my elective and to potentially join the team. A month or two later, I saw this position had become available, and the rest is history so to speak.

Get to know Sophie Zaini – Graduate

Originally from Singapore, Sophie first came to Australia to visit her uncle in Melbourne and fell in love with the country. It was a trip that turned her world upside down, prompting her to make the huge decision to move to Australia long term to complete her degree and set out on her career journey.

Having studied a Bachelor of Business with a major in International Management and Logistics at Charles Darwin University, Sophie has since made Darwin her new home and will be Northline’s first graduate to complete her operational rotations in Darwin.

Excited to embark on this new adventure, Sophie tells us more about herself and her thoughts on the program so far.

Why did you apply to the Northline Graduate Program?

After graduating from university, I felt like I needed more experience in the Logistics industry and that’s how I came across Northline’s Graduate Program. It’s a great way to step into the corporate world with all the support and guidance a graduate could need.

Northline offers all types of rotations, so graduates get experience in everything from Customer Service to Human Resources, Operations and everything in between. It will help me to establish what my future career in the industry will look like.

Northline’s program stood out to me because it’s a family business, and after leaving my family and life in Singapore, it was really important to me that I could work somewhere that feels like home. Northline welcomes new employees with open arms and prioritises employee wellbeing which in turn motivates employee morale and productivity. I love that everyone’s door is always open if you need to talk or need support. I thought I was dreaming when I met Craige Whitton, the CEO during my interview! I have never known a business where the CEO knows everyone by name and takes the time out of his schedule to welcome employees.

What do you hope to achieve during your time at Northline?

For now, I want to focus on getting as much experience and exposure as I can in each department and really understand how the industry works. I want to fully immerse myself in everything Northline, to understand how they help customers every step of the way.

What department are you looking forward to working in the most? (Past or future)

Before starting the program the only department I have experienced was Human Resources, so I’m looking forward to that rotation because I know that I can already work confidently. However, I am most looking forward to any of the operational rotations because that’s where I will learn firsthand just how much goes into moving freight from A to B. I’m excited to learn how to drive a forklift too!

What has been your favourite moment at Northline so far?

I can say that every department has its unique way of getting things around, but night shifts have been fun so far as it is my first time working through the night and spending most of my time on the forklifts helping as much as I can. Overall, I can say that every rotation in Darwin is incredible.

Everyone that I have worked with is amazing and has been helpful ensuring that I can understand everything that they do in Operations.

What are your plans for after the program?

Like I said before, at the moment I am just focusing on learning as much as possible and absorbing as much knowledge as I can. But I hope to make a career within Northline, and I am sure that during the rotations it will become clearer which department I would like to make a career in. The logistics world is very broad and there are so many career paths that I could take.
