Think work experience is just filing papers and making coffee? It’s time to think again!

When Seb joined AEMO for his Year 12 VET course, he stepped into a workplace buzzing with ideas, creativity, and real projects that mattered. From day one, he was welcomed into the team (and even designed t-shirts that will be worn at career fairs across Australia, how cool is that?).

So, if you want to follow in Sub’s footsteps and launch your dream career your way, dive in to his exclusive insider insights, and keep an eye out for details on how to apply!

Introducing AEMO

If you’re on the lookout for top-tier employers, it’s about time you meet AEMO: the guardian of Australia’s energy grid. Working at AEMO means being part of something bigger, where your ideas help shape the future of energy across the country. From managing electricity and gas systems to pioneering big-picture plans like the push toward net zero, AEMO is where smart tech meets smart thinking.

Whether you’re into engineering, data, analytics, or digital innovation, you’ll find a workplace that’s forward-thinking and genuinely excited about shaping Australia’s energy story. In short, AEMO is a great place to launch your career, but don’t just take it from us! To give you some insights into what their employees get up to each day, we’ve enlisted the help of Seb.

Seb Morris joined the AEMO team in 2025, but he already has tonnes of cool stories to tell. From his first-day nerves to the surprising projects he got to tackle, Seb’s giving you a front-row seat to what it’s really like stepping into a big organisation for the first time. Whether you’re curious about the kind of work you’ll do, the people you’ll meet, or how it feels to swap the classroom for the office, his story will help you picture your own AEMO Workplace Experience adventure.

What is your day like at AEMO?

A day at AEMO is really relaxed! During my first couple of days here I was worried because I thought that working in an office for a big company like this would be super scary and have heaps of rules, but it wasn’t like that at all. I get to the building around 9am, elevator up to the office, walk to my desk, and start my day by checking my emails and seeing what work is set for me.

The work is never anything too hard to understand, and there is always so much help. The staff have been so welcoming and kind my whole time at AEMO. Once I’m ready, I’ll go have some lunch before coming back to finish up whatever I was working on (and head home around 2:30-3 pm after a good day in the office).

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on?

The most interesting and fun piece of work was the t-shirt design project. It was the work I put the most time into, and it was very fun to have so much creative freedom and make something that is important to the company. It allowed me to create something I was proud of while also getting to go into a lot of detail on why I did it the way I did, which I really enjoyed.

AEMO is now using my design for their career fair shirts, and they’re also printing a number of shirts to use in the business.

What surprised you about working in a larger organisation?

The thing that surprised me the most about working for a larger organisation was how supportive everyone is and how easy going the workplace culture is. When I think of a job in an office building, I picture suits and ties, pretentiousness and a stressful workload, but it wasn’t like that at all. Everyone at AEMO is super relaxed and just wants you to be okay and make sure that you understand everything. If you need any help, they will always provide it.

I think the whole time I worked at AEMO I only saw 3 people wearing full suits, which was a bit of a shock to me, but it made me feel more normal wearing my jeans and jumper.

How can students get the most out of work experience?

To the next lucky person to be able to do work experience at AEMO, I know it sounds cliché, but take every bit of new experience you can get! Everyone is so accommodating and will find a way to fulfil your requests. Go into every bit of work you do with a high level of care because you will feel rewarded once you finish, and don’t be scared to ask questions because everyone knows you’re not super experienced; that’s why you’re here, and everyone wants to help you. Finally, have fun and find work that interests you!

How to Get Involved

Seb’s story proves that work experience at AEMO is so much more than shadowing someone at a desk. It’s about getting hands-on, discovering what you’re good at, and finding out how your skills can make an impact, all while being part of a team that truly wants you to succeed.

Whether you’re into creative projects, curious about how big organisations run, or just ready to try something new, AEMO’s work experience could be your ticket to a career you didn’t even know you’d love. So, take Seb’s advice: jump in, ask questions, and make the most of every opportunity. Learn more about engineering careers with AEMO and land your dream work experience role today!
