No Degree, No Problem: Jake’s Path to Success at Mawsons

If you’re unsure about whether to apply for a job in the construction materials supply industry, Jake has one piece of advice: “Don’t doubt yourself; just do it.”

Jake is the 2IC (second in charge) at Mawsons’ concrete plant in Echuca, and after just two years with the company, he’s already made major strides in his career. Since starting with an Operations Cadetship, he’s now in a leadership role and loving every minute. His story is a great example of how you don’t need a long list of qualifications to get started in this industry; just motivation, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.

However, working at Mawson’s isn’t just about hard work; it’s about connection, too. As part of his insider insights, he highlights the friendships he’s made and the support he’s received from the team as the best parts of the job. He also credits the company’s commitment to training and development for helping him move forward so quickly.

Want to follow in Jake’s footsteps and make some great friends along the way? Tune in and learn all about:

  • What it’s really like to start with no experience and climb the ranks at Mawsons.
  • How cadetships open doors to all kinds of roles, from servicing trucks to site leadership.
  • The value of supportive teammates and friendly banter on the job.
  • Jake’s favourite parts of the role and why he loves being out in the field.

Hi, my name’s Jake. I’m the 2IC at Mawsons concrete plant at Echuca and I’ve been with Mawsons for two years now.

Q: Can you tell us about your role and how you got started?

A: Mawsons offered me an Operation Cadetship which I applied for, spent 12 months in the role which I really enjoyed. And then I was offered a 2IC role at the Echuca concrete plant which I’m really enjoying at the moment.

Q: What are your favourite aspects about working for Mawsons?

A: My favourite aspect of Mawsons is the friendships I’ve made over the past 2 years I’ve been here, and the opportunities Mawsons offer.

Q: Can you share some highlights from your Mawsons career?

A: The highlights so far in Mawsons would be when I was a cadet. I spent a lot of time at Mawsons Mechanical in Cohuna, getting out on site with the boys, working on trucks, servicing trucks, and then when I came to Echuca as a cadet, I spent a lot of time in the truck with the boys out on site. Different jobs, was pretty exciting to see a lot of different things in Mawsons and the sites. And now I’ve been offered the opportunity to get my HR licence.

Q: What do you wish more people knew about your industry?

A: You don’t have to be qualified to pursue a role at Mawsons, and Mawsons also offer you a huge variety of different courses and training opportunities.

Q: What advice would you give your high school self?

A: If you’re thinking of applying for Mawsons, don’t doubt yourself, it’s a good opportunity.
