Your role:

As an ADF Gap Year Sailor you’ll get to experience a broad range of sailor roles that Navy has to offer. You’ll get to work as a fully integrated member of a Navy ship, establishment, or resident unit. You’ll gain unparalleled work and life experience and form friendships while receiving a generous salary and all the benefits of working in the ADF, like medical and dental coverage.

You’ll join as a General Duty Sailor. In your Gap Year, you’ll work both at sea and ashore, playing a key role in operating whichever ship or unit you’re in. You’ll get to participate in any number of seamanship tasks, including general rigging and rope work, berthing, and casting off, watch on deck, anchor work, and a range of seamanship evolutions.

At the end of the Gap Year program, you can choose to continue your career in the Navy or use the skills and experiences you’ve gained to move into an alternative career path. There’s no obligation to serve beyond the one-year program period.

Life in the Navy Gap Year Program:

The Navy Gap Year Program is a one-year commitment that takes you well beyond the ordinary to experience everything the Navy has to offer. Whether you’re sailing across the seas by ship, exploring the oceans depths by submarine or soaring above by helicopter, you’ll be given skills and experiences which could extend into a longer-term role in the Navy or elsewhere.

Salary:

Be paid to train and upon completion of your initial military and initial employment training, you could earn a package worth $66,855.

In addition to your salary, you will receive generous superannuation, housing subsidies, free medical and dental care, service, and uniform allowances, as well as a Maritime Allowance (if applicable).

For this role, you must have completed Year 12 level of secondary education (or equivalent) to Officer Entry standard and achieved an ATAR which would qualify you for a relevant degree stream at UNSW/ADFA.
