Your role

Take this great opportunity to develop as a leader with the Navy building your ability to think on your feet, prioritise, take in Information to make decisions and direct the play on the bridge of a ship. Learn what it’s like to be the Commanding Officer’s representative – the point person for executing the safe navigation and general operations of the ship or submarine.

Maritime Warfare Officers need to understand all aspects of the running of a ship or submarine so during your Gap Year you will also get a taste of the engineering, logistics and aviation departments providing a great overview of the Navy organisation – as well as having the opportunity to travel while you do it.

The position of Maritime Warfare Officer is highly respected and you will learn from those in executive roles. You will observe Maritime Warfare Officers leading their bridge team and directing other areas of the ship to get the job done – this includes s navigation, managing any issues that arise or the safe operation of helicopters on and off the ships as just some examples. You will also learn how Maritime Warfare Officers manage their team’s training, career development and welfare.

Coupled with the highest standard of leadership training, the skills you across this role are transferable to other management and leadership positions and will provide you a unique edge.

There’s also the extra opportunity to undertake ADF Gap Year as a Maritime Warfare Officer Submariner. You get all the same leadership experience, except you’re working as part of a tight-knit team in an advanced Collins Class submarine.

Salary

During your 12-month role, you’ll receive a salary package starting from $33,126.

In addition to your salary, you will receive generous superannuation, housing subsidies and free medical and dental care, service and uniform allowances, as well as a Maritime Allowance (if applicable).

For this role, you must have completed Year 12 level of secondary education (or equivalent) to Officer Entry standard and achieved an ATAR which would qualify you for entry into a degree at UNSW/ADFA.
