Enjoy cooking? Join the Army Gap Year program and in 12 months you’ll learn valuable skills needed to work in any kitchen. Not only will you gain new confidence, but you’ll be challenged to apply your culinary knowhow in exciting and unique environments – from working in a field kitchen to delivering meals for hundreds of soldiers.

Chefs in the Army provide more than just meals. The food you and your team prepare has a direct impact on the morale of your fellow soldiers and keeps them operating at peak cognitive and physical performance.

In this 12-month experience you’ll get a taste for the role of a full-time Army Chef and learn all the skills you’ll need to prepare a range of meals including entrees, main courses, sweets and more. Learn about the role of a Chef here.

Throughout your Gap Year program, you will be supported by professional and dedicated Army personnel, who will provide the guidance necessary for you to get the most out of this experience.

Your training will begin at Kapooka in Wagga Wagga, NSW, where you’ll complete approximately 12 weeks of recruit training. Training will involve physical training, weapon handling and shooting, first aid as well as, drill and field craft. It’s challenging, but it will prepare you for anything.

Once you complete your Initial Military Training you’ll begin your Initial Employment Training at the ADF School of Catering in Westernport, VIC. Here you’ll learn all the skills you need to prepare high value nutritious meals for large groups of people. This includes food safety, knife handling and menu-based catering.

Then you’ll be posted to one of the many Army bases across Australia. You could be posted to any unit and you may be called upon to use your skills in barracks, on exercises or in support of domestic operation. While your surroundings may change, your job role remains the same and is essential to the effective operation of the Army.

So, what happens next? After finishing your Gap Year program, you can choose to continue your career in the Army, or use the skills and experiences to gain an edge in future careers. There’s no obligation to serve beyond the one-year program period.
