Gain skills and experience for life in a high-tempo security role.

As a Gap Year Military Police member, you’ll join the team responsible for maintaining law and order in the Australian Defence Force. In your 12-month experience, you’ll learn new skills and apply them in a range of environments – from military bases, out in the field or working with other Army teams in support of domestic operations.

As a General Duties Military Police member you will learn to conduct a range of tasks including security and protection of assets and personnel, tactical investigation, traffic control and more. Military Police is a combat support role, however, it will be fast-paced and you’ll be close to the action. Learn more about the Military Police role here.

Throughout your Gap Year program, you will be supported by professional and dedicated Army personnel, who will provide the guidance necessary for you to get the most out of this experience.

Your training will begin at Kapooka in Wagga Wagga, NSW, where you’ll complete 12 weeks of recruit training. Training will involve physical training, weapon handling and shooting, first aid, drill and field craft. It’s challenging, but it will prepare you for anything.

Once you complete your Initial Military Training you’ll begin your Initial Employment Training at the Defence Force School of Policing in Holsworthy, NSW where you’ll learn the policing skills you need – from investigative procedures to the use of a speed measuring device.

Next, you’ll be posted to a Military Police unit across Australia. Here you’ll join an experienced team and have opportunities to put your new skills to the test. All while making friends and gaining experience that will last you a lifetime.

So, what happens next? After finishing your Gap Year program, you can choose to continue your career in the Army and upskill in one of the available Military Police specialisations from investigation, dog handling and close personnel protection. Or you can use your skills and experiences to gain an edge in future careers. There’s no obligation to serve beyond the one-year program period.
