Closing in 20 hoursQueensland Parks and Wildlife Services & Partnerships (QPWS&P) invite applications from suitable First Nations candidates to join their Ranger team at Elgoy Olkola National Park Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land (CYPAL) permanently. If you are self-motivated, have a passion for land management and enjoy operating in a remote setting, then read on!
This is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identified role. Under section 105 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (QLD), it is an equal opportunity measure for the incumbent to be an Aboriginal person and/or Torres Strait Islander person. Only applications from Aboriginal people and/or Torres Strait Islander people will be considered for this role.
As a successful Ranger based at Elgoy you will be part of a three-person team who look after over 400 000 hectares of remote Olkola and Alwal National Parks (Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land CYPAL) located in the centre of Cape York, a 5-hour drive (330km) Northwest of Mareeba and 3.5 hours (290km) west of Cooktown.
The area has high cultural significance for Olkola Traditional Owners and as they are our joint management partners, we are expected to have a positive productive working relationship with Olkola rangers. The parks have over 400kms of boundary fences, in a fire prone landscape where access can be challenging.
Ideally you will be comfortable with living and working in a remote setting, you’ll be someone who is flexible, easy to get along with, have practical skills, particularly in the areas of fencing, pest control (weeds and feral animals), general maintenance and fire management. If you have machinery maintenance and operating experience, this would also be an advantage but not essential as training will be provided to you over time.
There will be opportunity for you to become involved in threatened species projects for example Golden Shouldered Parrot and Rock wallaby surveys. As the area is remote with very little visitation there is scope for our rangers to develop their own projects under the supervision of the Ranger In Charge and OO4 Ranger depending on where your interest lies.
While this position is based in Elgoy / Olkola National Park (CYPAL) travel to other locations may be required from time to time. This includes overnight stays. Rangers work on a 10/4 roster basis which includes regular weekend work.
Accommodation in a partially furnished house is provided on site. During the wet season there are times when access becomes difficult and often staff may become isolated at Elgoy base for extended periods.
