Video Transcript:
My name is Tarkin and I’ve been a quarry operator at Mawsons for 2 1/2 years.
Q: Can you tell us about your role as a trainee and how you got started?
A: When I first started at Mawsons I was doing one day a week while I was still at school. Once I was old enough to leave school I finished year 11 and then I started working full time at the quarry. Within a year at Mawson’s I was offered to start a certificate III in surface extractions.
Q: What are some of your favourite aspects about working for Mawson’s?
A: I enjoy the variety of work that we do here in Mawsons. It’s something different every day and in a day I could vary between working in a machine or working fixing something over at the plant. Mawsons are supportive and offer lots of training such as getting your forklift license.
Q: What have been some highlights from your traineeship so far?
A: Some of the highlights for doing the traineeship is expanding my knowledge on quarrying and meeting new people through doing the certificate.
Q: What do you wish more young people knew about your industry?
A: You don’t have to be experienced because Mawsons provide you with all on-site training. What I found surprising is that working in a quarry can lead you to so many other different career opportunities and paths.
Q: What advice would you give your high school self?
A: If you’re not enjoying school and you want to work in this industry, my advice would be just to go for. There are great options other than going to uni and I think that quarrying is one of them.
