People Who Count: Celebrating Multicultural Month with Queensland Rail!

This August, Queensland Rail is celebrating Multicultural Queensland Month, where we celebrate the many cultures and languages across Queensland.

Join us to learn more about what Queensland Rail has been up to and discover what multiculturalism means to them!

What is Multicultural Month?

Almost a quarter of Queenslanders are born overseas, and many have at least one parent born in a country other than Australia. Multicultural Month is a vibrant celebration honouring the diverse tapestry of cultures that call this region home.

Throughout the month, communities across the state come together to showcase their rich traditions, art, music, and culinary delights, fostering unity, and understanding among its residents.

This annual celebration serves as a reminder of the strength of embracing differences and learning from one another. Multicultural Month in Queensland promotes cross-cultural understanding and creates a sense of belonging for everyone, regardless of background.

How Queensland Rail Are Celebrating

The theme for the month is ‘Many Cultures, One Queensland: Putting Inclusion into Action’.  Queensland Rail are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace aligned with their 1TEAM values.  As part of this commitment, they are delivering a series of webinars this month across their organisation, presented by industry experts aimed at promoting cultural diversity and inclusion.

Queensland Rail kicked off Multicultural Queensland Month with a photo booth and cupcake pop-up.  This was an opportunity for people to connect and learn more about their unique stories and backgrounds.

If you pass through the CBD-based stations this month, listen out for multilingual station announcements in Punjabi, Shona, Chinese, Tagalog and more!

Queensland Rail is committed to ensuring their workforce represents the vibrant community it serves, and recognises the diversity of their people is vital to delivering their commitment to connecting communities. Multicultural Queensland Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the incredible multicultural tapestry of their employees and customers.

Celebrating Multiculturalism, Diversity & Inclusion All Year Round

Queensland Rail is a team of thousands, and they are proud of their individual, diverse journeys, and stories. As the company grows, they need more diverse backgrounds and perspectives than ever before.

In early 2020, Queensland Rail established an ‘Inclusion Council’ to support the creation of an authentically inclusive workplace where all employees feel safe, respected, and valued for their contribution and engaged to achieve their full potential.

The Inclusion Council comprises the Executive Leadership team, business enablers, and Inclusion Community leads in the areas of:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • LGBTIQ+
  • First Nations
  • Accessibility
  • Multicultural QR
  • Domestic and Family Violence Prevention.

Some of their Multicultural QR members joined the Rail Safety Education Team last week at Platform 10 as part of Multicultural Queensland Month.

They welcomed and helped facilitate a group of students from Milpera State High School that had recently arrived in Australia. Most students are unfamiliar with rail travel, and English is often their second language.

The Rail Safety Education team do a fantastic job engaging and educating the community, and the Multicultural QR members said it was an honour to be a part of their Rail Safety Orientation Day!
