Amber’s Journey: How an Apprenticeship with CMV Group Kickstarted Her Career

Ever wondered what an automotive apprenticeship is really like? For Amber, it was more than just learning a trade. It was the start of a career she loves.

Amber joined the CMV Group as an apprentice at CMI Toyota. Fast forward a few years, and she’s now a qualified technician, continuing her training to become a diagnostic technician, and already planning her next step into a dual trade.

Here’s what her journey has looked like and why she reckons an automotive apprenticeship could be the perfect next move for you.

Getting Started

Amber’s day often began before the rest of the team, setting up the workshop, checking stock and getting tools ready. “It meant the technicians could jump straight into their jobs, and I got an early start on learning the ropes,” she says.

Soon she was shadowing technicians on real cars, picking up new skills every shift. “At first you’re watching and helping out. As you grow in confidence, you start taking on your own jobs like basic services, oil changes and safety checks. It’s hands-on from day one.”

Balancing Work and Study

Like many apprentices, Amber juggled TAFE theory with on-the-job learning. Having dedicated study days and mentors who signed off her work made the balance easier. “The theory and practical just come together,” she explains.

Support That Matters

Starting something new can feel overwhelming, but Amber says the support at CMV Group made all the difference. From mentors and workshop controllers to other technicians, there was always someone ready to help. “They’re invested in giving you the tools and training you need to succeed.”

Growing Your Skills

So what do you actually learn? Amber breaks it down:

  • Year 1: The basics. Servicing cars, learning safety and how to use tools properly.
  • Later years: Bigger jobs like removing engines and diagnosing issues.

“You’re never thrown in the deep end. You build up gradually,” she says.

After qualifying, Amber completed Toyota’s diagnostic training and is now eyeing off auto electrical. “There’s always an opportunity to keep learning.”

The Culture

One of the highlights for Amber has been the culture. “It’s like a big family in the workshop. Everyone cares about each other and looks out for the little things,” she says.

As a South Australian family-owned company with strong values, CMV Group gives apprentices a chance to learn in a supportive, down-to-earth environment.

And the work? “Never boring,” Amber says. “You don’t just replace parts. You diagnose, problem-solve and get to the bottom of issues. Every day is different.”

Rewards and Challenges

Amber says nothing beats looking at the job board at the end of the day and knowing all the work is done. “Getting positive feedback from customers is always a highlight.”

The toughest part at first? Some of the physical jobs. “Tight bolts were a challenge, but CMV encourages you to figure out tricks, build your toolbox and find what works for you.”

Amber’s Advice

Amber lives by the saying “don’t say no, just have a go.” Her advice for anyone thinking about an apprenticeship: “If you love cars or hands-on work, try it. If it’s not for you, that’s okay, but you’ll never know unless you give it a go.”

Her three words to sum up the journey: Challenging. Rewarding. Inspiring.
