Apprenticeships With Big Machines: Why CEA Isn’t Your Average Workshop

Big Machines, Bigger Opportunities

At CEA, apprentices don’t just work on engines – they work on some of the biggest and most advanced machines in Australia. CEA sells, distributes and services equipment from global brands like JCB, Dynapac, Atlas Copco and Ditch Witch, giving apprentices hands-on experience with a huge range of machinery.

From construction and infrastructure to agriculture and utilities, no two days – or machines – are the same. Here’s a snapshot of what apprentices might get to work on:

Trenchers and Directional Drills (Ditch Witch) – Used for underground utility work such as fibre optics and plumbing, these machines introduce apprentices to hydraulic systems, electronic controls and GPS-guided technology.

Compaction Equipment (Dynapac) – Pneumatic rollers, tandem rollers and large soil compactors that teach the science behind vibration systems and ground compaction.

Mobile Generators and Air Compressors (Atlas Copco) – High-output diesel generators and industrial air compressors that give exposure to advanced electrical systems.

Telehandlers and High-Reach Loaders (JCB) – Diesel and electric models that provide experience with emerging technologies and modern safety systems.

Why Heavy Machinery is a Whole Different Ball Game

Working on heavy machinery isn’t like fixing cars or small engines. It’s bigger, more complex and incredibly rewarding. The scale of the work alone makes it exciting – these machines are built for power and precision, and seeing them in action never gets old.

There’s a real sense of achievement that comes with diagnosing a tricky fault or getting a massive piece of equipment back up and running. Apprentices learn to combine mechanical, electrical and hydraulic skills, building a diverse toolkit that opens doors to industries like mining, agriculture, transport and construction.

These are highly transferable skills that can take you anywhere – across Australia or even overseas. Heavy equipment technicians are always in demand, and the experience builds technical confidence, problem-solving ability and adaptability that will serve you in any career path.

Tech at the Core: More Than Nuts and Bolts

Today’s heavy equipment is as much about technology as it is about torque.

At CEA, apprentices learn to use advanced diagnostic tools and software that make repairs faster and more accurate. They work with modern hydraulic and electronic control systems, gaining experience in telematics, GPS and automation.

Technology is transforming the role of a mechanic. It’s no longer just manual work – it’s about analysing data, using digital tools and predicting issues before they happen. Apprentices learn to think like problem-solvers and technicians, not just mechanics.

For students who love technology, a mechanical apprenticeship offers the best of both worlds. You’ll work hands-on with cutting-edge machines, use diagnostic software and electronics, and develop future-ready skills that are in high demand.

Pathways for Every Apprentice

CEA is committed to helping apprentices grow. From day one, apprentices receive structured training and ongoing mentorship from experienced technicians and supervisors. With a dedicated Apprentice Mentor, support is never far away.

Once qualified, apprentices can choose to specialise in areas such as diagnostics, hydraulics or electrical systems. Others move into leadership roles as team supervisors or trainers, or into mobile technician positions supporting customers onsite at major projects. There are even opportunities to step into sales, product support and management roles.

Meet Jack: From Apprentice to Workshop Manager

Jack started his apprenticeship in 2017 and joined CEA in his third year, completing a Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology. With CEA’s support, he went on to complete a second qualification – a Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology.

Fast forward to today, and Jack is now the Workshop Manager at CEA’s South Australian branch, leading a team of technicians and apprentices. His journey shows what’s possible with the right mix of hard work, determination and support.

“I’ve learned so much here, and I’m still learning every day. CEA has been behind me from the start.”

Build Your Career With CEA

An apprenticeship at CEA means learning from industry leaders, working on some of the world’s biggest machines and gaining skills that open doors across Australia and beyond.

If you’re hands-on, curious and ready to kickstart your career with serious machinery, CEA could be the place for you.
