Cadet Your Own Way! Meet Mia Sherry, Administration Clerk with Qube

Ready than ever to embark on an exciting career journey in an industry fueled by innovation and progression?

Look no further than the Qube Cadet Program!

Our employer partner, Qube, understands that their people are their greatest asset, driving the organisation’s success and delivering exceptional results in the Transport and Logistics industry.

We caught up with Mia Sherry, Administration Clerk, who started her journey through the Cadet Program. Mia shares more about her career so far, what she loves about her role and how Qube has supported her to grow as a professional in this exciting industry!

Who is your organisation, and what do they do?

I work for Qube, a national provider of import and export logistic services, including rail and road transport, warehousing, distribution and international freight forwarding.

Tell us a bit about your role and how you ended up there.

I work with our truck drivers to ensure their work is completed and correctly inputted into our system. I do this by checking the run sheets, which provide details on their deliveries, ensuring we know where the driver went and what sort of delivery they made.

If this information is correct in our system, we can invoice the customer correctly and track the deliveries if an issue arises. I also have a set of customers I provide weekly invoices.

What was your journey from school into your career like?

I completed year 12 in 2018 and went on to complete a Certificate IV in Youth Work at RMIT University, but I decided I wanted to enter the workforce to gain as much experience as possible.

This was quite the challenge when Covid hit in 2020, but luckily, I gained some warehouse experience. In 2021 I interviewed for a role in the invoicing team at Qube, which I was lucky enough to secure.

Tell us about your workplace culture – what’s it like working for your company?

It’s a great company to work for; they have a big focus on giving their employees all the training and tools needed to have a successful career. There’s also a real focus on sustainability and on offering flexible work conditions.

In my first year, I participated in a cadet program which gave us insight into how much goes into our company’s work. We heard from many Qube employees in a wide range of roles – from someone who was the lead on our new rail system to an automation engineer at our Moorebank facility.

The opportunities are endless, and the workplace culture here is always positive, with everyone keen for you to keep improving and learning to further your career.

What are the best things about your job/workplace for you?

My favourite thing about the job definitely is the people and the community feeling the workplace has.

When I started at Qube, we were in full lockdown, so the opportunity to get to know everyone was limited. This persisted for the first six months of my employment, but since having everyone back in the office, there was an immediate lift in the energy around the place.

I am lucky to have a great team who care about how one another is doing and ensure we all give 100% effort into the work we provide.

What advice would you give your younger self when starting your career journey?

If I were to give my younger self some advice, it would be to try different things and take any opportunity given. For someone like me who wasn’t sure of what future career I wanted, trying a bunch of different roles would have allowed me to explore so many avenues that I didn’t even know existed.

How can a young person get started with your company – what skills and attributes do you look for?

For any young person that wants to give working at Qube a go, I recommend checking our website for potential career or cadet opportunities.
