A Day in the Life of a Mainfreight Graduate

“There’s always something happening, and the fast pace keeps things exciting—I really enjoy that.”

My day usually starts with a walk with my dog—a simple routine that helps me clear my head and get ready for the day. After that, I put on my Mainfreight uniform, which we call our “blues.” I really like that the blues have your name on them; it makes conversations easier and more personal, and it creates a sense of connection across the team.

When I get to the warehousing branch, I greet the team and grab a coffee before checking emails and printing the daily orders for my customers. As a Customer Champion, I’m the person my customers turn to when they need something done. My role is about making sure everything runs smoothly and being involved in discussions about supply chain plans and how they’ll work in operations.

As I’m based right near my customers’ freight, I can step out onto the warehouse floor whenever needed. It’s a great mix—I get to handle tasks directly and build strong relationships with customers. I’m also part of monthly Key Performance Indicator meetings, where we review performance. It’s incredibly rewarding to see metrics exceeded and know you’ve contributed directly to that success. If you’re someone who doesn’t want to be stuck behind a desk all day, this role gives you the best of both worlds.

After checking emails, I move on to one of my main responsibilities: keeping customer accounts up to date. This means working across different systems, and one tool I use regularly is Excel. Since starting the graduate program, my Excel skills have improved significantly. Mainfreight offers training courses—a week-long induction, leadership training, and Excel courses—and because I use Excel every day, I’ve been able to put what I’ve learned straight into practice.

Once all the accounts are checked and updated, it’s time for the hands-on part of the day. I hop on a forklift and help with operations. There’s always something happening, and the fast pace keeps things exciting—I really enjoy that.

After completing all my morning tasks, I head over to Mainfreight’s on-site kitchen, which is a standout benefit. The kitchen offers a range of lunch options cooked fresh by our chefs, and it’s a great time to sit down with the rest of the team and build strong relationships.

What I enjoy most about this role is the variety and the learning. It’s not just sitting at a desk—I get to work with customers, use interesting systems, and get involved in operations. That mix keeps things interesting and gives me a real understanding of how everything fits together. The training and support have been huge for building my skills, and the team culture makes it easy to feel part of something bigger. For me, it’s a role where you’re trusted to take ownership, learn fast, and make a real impact—not only for Mainfreight but also for your customers.
