Starting your first job is exciting, but it can also feel a little intimidating. If you’ve never worked before, you might wonder whether you have enough experience to stand out.
The truth is, most employers hiring for entry-level roles aren’t expecting you to know everything from day one. They’re looking for people who are eager to learn, have a positive attitude and are ready to give things a go.
At Coles, many team members started with little or no retail experience. Some were students looking for flexible work, others were building their careers, and some simply wanted the opportunity to get started. What they all discovered was that their first job became a place to build skills, confidence and lasting friendships.
Learning beats experience
Everyone starts somewhere. That’s why your first job isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about being open to learning.
The people who grow the fastest are usually the ones who ask questions, embrace new challenges and see every shift as an opportunity to improve.
Dairy Manager Alistair has seen the value of that mindset throughout his 15-year career.
“Don’t be scared of the changes that happen in store. If you push them away, you’ll miss the chance to learn the right processes and develop new skills.”
His advice is simple: stay curious. Every new task is another chance to build skills that will help throughout your career.
Attitude opens doors
A great attitude will often take you further than experience.
Showing up on time, taking initiative and putting your hand up for opportunities demonstrates the kind of qualities employers remember.
Alistair’s own career reflects that approach.
“I put my hand up for a Duty Manager position, Coles took a chance on me, and I’ve worked my way through different stores and roles to where I am today.”
It’s a reminder that careers often grow because people are willing to step outside their comfort zone, not because they had years of experience when they started.

You’ll build confidence and people skills
One of the biggest surprises for many people in their first job is how much more confident they become.
Working with customers and teammates helps you communicate more effectively, think on your feet and feel comfortable working with all kinds of people.
For Alistair, that’s been one of the biggest personal changes.
“When I first started, I was very shy and kept to myself. This job has really helped me come out of my shell, open up more and become much more confident.”
Bakery Team Member Elior has also developed skills he’ll carry into future roles.
“Two of the biggest skills I’ve learned are customer service and time management.”
He says learning “how to work with customers, communicate professionally and deal with all different types of people” has been one of the most valuable parts of his experience.
You’ll learn skills for life
Your first job teaches you far more than how to do the role itself.
Every shift is an opportunity to develop skills you’ll use throughout your career, regardless of the industry you work in.
Grocery Team Member Maneesh says one of his biggest takeaways has been learning patience and adaptability.
“I’ve learned how to deal with customers, be patient, and understand that every customer is different, so you have to handle each situation differently.”
Whether it’s time management, communication or problem-solving, these are skills that stay with you long after your first job.
You don’t have to do it alone
Starting somewhere new is always easier when you’re surrounded by supportive people.
One thing that stands out across every Coles story is the team culture.
For Elior, that’s what he enjoys most.
“The thing I like most about working in the bakery is the team. We all get along, have a bit of banter and work really well together.”
Jess agrees.
“The best part is definitely the team. Everyone is really friendly, easy to get along with and it makes coming to work fun.”
Having supportive teammates means you’ll always have people to learn from, turn to with questions and celebrate your progress with.
You don’t need experience to get started
Everyone has a first day. Everyone starts by learning.
If you’re thinking about applying for your first job, don’t let a lack of experience hold you back.
Jess puts it best:
“I’d say just apply. You don’t need any experience because you learn everything on the job. There are so many opportunities to learn new skills, and it’s a really rewarding place to work.”
Your first job isn’t about having the perfect resume. It’s about showing up with the right attitude, being willing to learn and taking the first step. The experience will follow.
Whether you’re in high school, uni, or simply ready to kick off your career, Coles Group offers opportunities to gain experience and build skills alongside a supportive team.
