Accounting has been the gateway to new experiences, skills, and relationships I could never imagined.

Hello, my name is Jaanvi and I currently work as an audit undergraduate at Grant Thornton. In high school, I was lucky enough to study accounting in years 11 and 12. Exceptional teachers fuelled my interest further, and I even dipped my toes in accounting-based competitions, which solidified my growing passion.

Beyond the classroom, conversations with family and mentors offered an insider’s glimpse into the life of an accountant. When university decisions rolled around, choosing Australia and UQ felt like a natural next step. I was drawn to the country’s dynamic business environment and opportunities to study while gaining practical experience. Complimenting theory with internships has been a game changer. Attending industry events and engaging with professionals not only broadened my appreciation for accounting but also led me to some genuinely inspiring connections.

What excites me the most is the impact accounting allows me to have. I’m a firm believer in making meaningful contributions wherever I go, and accounting offers a unique opportunity to influence businesses, shape decisions and drive positive change. The industry is so people focused and that’s something I throw it on, whether it’s building relationships with clients or collaborating with colleagues. Pair that with the intellectual challenge of solving complex problems and you’ve got yourself a career that keeps you sharp and fulfilled.

I hope to show that accounting is so much more than numbers. It’s about creating value, solving challenges, and building connections. By sharing my journey, I’d love to encourage other students, especially international ones like myself, to take the leap, get involved and embrace the industry with an open mind. Accounting is the pulse of any business. It tracks performance, informed strategy and keeps everything in check. Without it, businesses would be like ships with no compass. Accounting isn’t just important, it’s indispensable.

Networking has been my not-so-secret weapon as an international student. It’s not just about building a professional circle, it’s about creating a support system. Whether it’s meeting peers who get it, learning from experienced professionals, or learning opportunities I never thought possible, networking has made all the difference.

University events and student societies have been particularly powerful for me. They’ve allowed me to gain confidence, develop my leadership skills and most importantly, feel part of a community that spans beyond words.

When I first started my accounting journey, I didn’t expect that it would lead me to Australia, allow me to work with a global firm and connect with so many incredible people along the way. Accounting has been the gateway to new experiences, skills and relationships I could never imagined. And I know that this is just the beginning.
