It’s a great job, you’ll learn so much, it’s really interesting and every day is different.
Hi, my name is Caitlin.
I’m an apprentice overhead power line worker for Powercor Colac.
Some of my favourite aspects for working for Powercor would be the people that I get to work with.
There’s a really great group of people in Colac and I’ve made some really nice friends as well as on the job.
Being up in the bucket on a really nice day is probably one of my favourite things.
Before I started looking at this career, I didn’t know a huge amount about Powercor or the power industry and since I’ve started the job, I’ve learned a lot.
Probably one of the things that I didn’t expect was how interesting it is and how varied the jobs are.
As a line worker working for a company like Powercor, you have a lot of opportunities, especially in rural areas, to have a great career and then also in the future have a big company support you in learning a lot of different skills and upskilling yourself throughout your whole career.
I would probably tell her to focus a little bit more on what you want and what you want to do in the future and to not think so much about what others think.
When I looked quite deeply into the recruitment website and saw all the different things that they were doing to encourage women into trade, it sort of took away that little element of self-doubt that I had, that maybe my application wouldn’t get looked at because I was a woman.
But being able to see that on Powercor’s website and reading about the job really encouraged me to apply.
Every day is very different, but I guess your average day would be that you turn up to your work centre and you get split up into groups based on what the jobs are for the day.
And then your project leader will give you your tasks.
You go out and grab the gear for the task that you need to do for the day, or maybe it’s already prepared, and then you go out on site, you do your safety briefings, you do your isolations and bits and pieces and do the work and then you come back, you clean off the truck and you go home.
Working up in the EWP (Elevated Work Platform), some of our buckets go 16-19 metres depending on what EWP you’re in and you really get some amazing views.
Go for it, it’s a great job. You’ll learn so much.
It’s really interesting and every day is different.
