The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is responsible for operating Australia’s electricity and gas systems to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.
AEMO plays a key role in shaping the future of Australia’s energy landscape, which is rapidly changing as a result of new technologies, consumer behaviour, and the government’s commitment to emissions targets to reach net zero.
In addition to operating the energy systems, AEMO also operates the markets that enable energy to be traded and it has a key planning role to prepare for the future.
In close collaboration with the energy industry, governments and peak energy sector bodies, AEMO is engineering future power systems built on renewable energy, firming technologies including gas, new transmission and operating at times, entirely on renewable energy.
As an employer, AEMO offers a unique opportunity for people who are passionate about technology, innovation, and problem-solving.
AEMO fosters a dynamic and supportive environment, offering roles where our people can be part of something that impacts millions of Australians every day. If you’re interested in contributing to the future of energy, AEMO provides opportunities to learn, grow, and make a real difference
Joining AEMO means becoming part of a team that’s not just focused on today but on building a better energy future for Australia. If you’re passionate about energy, technology, and making a positive impact, AEMO offers a range of exciting career pathways.
What does AEMO do?
AEMO is responsible for keeping Australia’s energy running smoothly. We operate both the electricity and gas systems to make sure homes, businesses, and industries have access to reliable and affordable energy.
How do we do it?
AEMO operates the National Electricity Market (NEM) across eastern and southeastern Australia, as well as the Wholesale Energy Market (WEM) in Western Australia. We oversee the gas supply networks too, making sure the gas flowing through pipelines reaches where it needs to go. Our 24/7 control rooms monitor energy supply and demand, as well as system security, to ensure everything stays in balance.
AEMO also operates Australia’s energy markets, like the stock market for energy. We run the platforms where energy is bought and sold, making sure everything runs smoothly. This helps ensure energy is distributed efficiently and cost-effectively. For electricity, we match supply with demand, bringing the cheapest energy sources online first to minimise costs for consumers. In the gas market, AEMO manages trades and helps ensure gas is delivered where it’s needed.
Shaping Australia’s Energy Future
With Australia’s energy system undergoing massive change, AEMO’s work is crucial in planning for the future.
Technologies like solar and wind power, the rapid uptake of rooftop solar, batteries and electric vehicles is changing how we power our homes and it’s reshaping the grid as well as the future planning for the systems and markets.
AEMO is also involved in designing and trialling new energy solutions, working closely with the energy industry to develop and deploy innovative solutions like the work undertaken this year to fully integrate grid scale batteries into the NEM.
These trials help make sure the latest innovations are used to improve Australia’s energy system.
This work, which was supported by more than 20 of AEMO’s teams, built the foundations for batteries to play a bigger role in the NEM and enable the transition from coal-powered electricity to renewable generation.
Collaboration is Key
AEMO doesn’t work alone. We collaborate with government agencies, energy companies, and other industry bodies to ensure the best outcomes for Australian consumers. By working together, AEMO and others can make informed decisions, and address the challenges of today’s rapidly changing energy sector.
In short, AEMO plays a central role in keeping energy systems running smoothly today and preparing for the future. From operating energy markets to managing electricity and gas networks, AEMO is at the heart of Australia’s energy system, ensuring secure and reliable energy for all.
