Should I go to University or Tafe?

If you like a hands on while you learn type job, then a trade career might be for you. This means finding an employer to take you on as an apprentice, and then you would enrol and attend trade school whilst working and earning money.

If you like the idea of university, you would choose a degree that might lead to one of the jobs that sounds interesting. There’s a lot more class and study time involved with uni, and usually you need to wait till your finished to find a full time paid job in your career choice.

University = Graduate Program

Our graduates undertake a two-year program, which offers a mix of on-the-job learning, formal professional development, and mentoring to accelerate your growth. We consider many degree disciplines including Engineering, Business, Economics, Law and Science. You can apply for a graduate position at the end of your final year of uni.

Tafe = Apprenticeships or Traineeships

The bonus of taking an apprenticeship or traineeship pathway, means that you will be completing a nationally recognised qualification, whilst getting valuable work experience, AND getting paid! APA can offer apprenticeships in Welding, Mechanical Fitting, Gasfitting, Civil Construction, and a dual trade in Electrical and Instrumentation, and traineeships in business admin.

Our Programs

Apprenticeship Program

The APA Apprenticeship Program is designed to support our strategy of maintaining a highly-skilled workforce.

APA has workplaces in all mainland state and territory capitals, alongside multiple regional, rural and remote centres. Available locations and roles will vary from year to year. We are focused on keeping talent local and aim to create opportunities for new career paths within regional communities.

APA will offer apprenticeships to begin your career in the following areas:

  • Engineering mechanical trade
  • Electrical and instrumentation
  • Fabrication (welding)
  • Gas fitting

Career paths and skills development

If you’re successful in gaining an apprenticeship position at APA, it means we want you on the team, even after your apprenticeship is over.

You will have regular performance reviews to help you progress during your apprenticeship, and once it has been successfully completed, there will be further development opportunities. You may choose to stay in the trade or continue upskilling by moving to other areas in the business, such as engineering, operations or management roles.

What are we looking for?

Positions are open to school leavers (aged 16 and above) and mature-age applicants, and we strongly encourage women and Indigenous Australians to apply. Roles are suitable for newcomers, as well as second and third-year apprentices.

We want you to succeed and enjoy your career choice, so we strongly recommend that you have completed any relevant pre-apprenticeship or pre-vocational courses and have attended work experience visits in the relevant field. These immersions will give you an idea of what’s involved in the trade and will ensure you have a genuine interest in the role you’re applying for.

Graduate Program

The APA Graduate Development Program is a two-year learning journey designed to develop our future leaders and technical specialists. As a graduate, you will gain valuable industry experience and learn about our business. You will complete three structured rotations in line with your discipline and interests. Working collaboratively across teams is important at APA, and you will have the opportunity to work on a range of challenging projects across our business. Alongside gaining valuable on-the-job experience is the chance to build networks that will last a lifetime.

Your graduate development program will be the start of your career at APA, and we know growth and progression are important to you. During your two years, there will be opportunities to receive feedback on your performance and set goals for your future career.

To help you on your learning journey, you will participate in a customised development program focusing on skills such as resilience, managing change, personal brand, communication, teamwork and networking.

We look for students with a range of degrees, including (but not limited) to:

  • Engineering: Mechanical, Chemical/Process and Electrical.
  • Business/Law/Arts: Arts, Finance, Accounting, Commerce, Economics, Procurement, Law, Human Resources, Marketing, Management, Project Management.
  • Transformation and Technology: Analytics, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Data Science, Computer Science.
  • Health Science/Science: Safety, Health, Environmental Management, Sustainability. 

Intern program

Our Intern program is a structured program that runs for 12 weeks, from November to February each year. Working with a team aligned to your area of study, you will receive structured onboarding and induction, on-the-job training, and networking opportunities. We will provide meaningful work and appropriate supervision while you are observing and learning. Being a part of our Intern program could be a fantastic pathway toward the Graduate Development Program.

To be considered for the Intern program, you will be in your penultimate year of study. At the completion of your Intern program, this could lead to an ongoing opportunity to continue within your team, depending on business projects and workload.

Work Experience

APA recognises that choosing a career path is not an easy decision. And it can be even harder without understanding exactly what the day-to-day aspects of different job roles look like.

Participating in work experience can help you decide what type of jobs interest you and those that don’t, as well as provide exposure to career options you may not have considered. It’s a good idea to seek out work experience opportunities before you commit to a university degree or apprenticeship, and it will also be beneficial to include on resumes when applying for career-start positions.

APA can offer work experience in a wide variety of roles, and positions can range from one day to one week onsite.
