Apprenticeship Program
The APA Apprenticeship Program is designed to support our strategy of maintaining a highly-skilled workforce.
APA has workplaces in all mainland state and territory capitals, alongside multiple regional, rural and remote centres. Available locations and roles will vary from year to year. We are focused on keeping talent local and aim to create opportunities for new career paths within regional communities.
APA will offer apprenticeships to begin your career in the following areas:
Engineering mechanical trade
Electrical and instrumentation
Fabrication (welding)
Gas fitting
Career paths and skills development
If you’re successful in gaining an apprenticeship position at APA, it means we want you on the team, even after your apprenticeship is over.
You will have regular performance reviews to help you progress during your apprenticeship, and once it has been successfully completed, there will be further development opportunities. You may choose to stay in the trade or continue upskilling by moving to other areas in the business, such as engineering, operations or management roles.
What are we looking for?
Positions are open to school leavers (aged 16 and above) and mature-age applicants, and we strongly encourage women and Indigenous Australians to apply. Roles are suitable for newcomers, as well as second and third-year apprentices.
At APA, we value the following qualities in a new apprentice:
Can-do attitude
Strong work ethic
Ability to follow directions
Willingness to work hard
Teamwork
Self-motivation and initiative
Attention to detail
Strong communication skills
We want you to succeed and enjoy your career choice, so we strongly recommend that you have completed any relevant pre-apprenticeship or pre-vocational courses and have attended work experience visits in the relevant field. These immersions will give you an idea of what’s involved in the trade and will ensure you have a genuine interest in the role you’re applying for.
Graduate Program
The APA Graduate Development Program is a two-year learning journey designed to develop our future leaders and technical specialists. As a graduate, you will gain valuable industry experience and learn about our business. You will complete three structured rotations in line with your discipline and interests. Working collaboratively across teams is important at APA, and you will have the opportunity to work on a range of challenging projects across our business. Alongside gaining valuable on-the-job experience is the chance to build networks that will last a lifetime.

To help you on your learning journey, you will participate in a customised development program focusing on skills such as resilience, managing change, personal brand, communication, teamwork and networking.

We will provide meaningful work and appropriate supervision while you are observing and learning. Being a part of our Intern program could be a fantastic pathway toward the Graduate Development Program.
To be considered for the Intern program, you will be in your penultimate year of study. At the completion of your Intern program, this could lead to an ongoing opportunity to continue within your team, depending on business projects and workload.
Opportunities within these programs vary year to year and will be advertised on our careers page.
Work Experience
APA recognises that choosing a career path is not an easy decision. And it can be even harder without understanding exactly what the day-to-day aspects of different job roles look like.
Participating in work experience can help you decide what type of jobs interest you and those that don’t, as well as provide exposure to career options you may not have considered. It’s a good idea to seek out work experience opportunities before you commit to a university degree or apprenticeship, and it will also be beneficial to include on resumes when applying for career-start positions.
APA can offer work experience in a wide variety of roles, and positions can range from one day to one week onsite.

Our People
Meet Jess | Learning Solutions Developer
“I feel very lucky to have been offered the opportunity to work with APA. I recently graduated from university with a Bachelor of Design (Digital Media Design) and did not even realise that an energy company would have a role suited for me. APA is a large company that is focused on internal training and development. My role involves developing learning modules — sourcing information, sometimes dry and functional, then transforming it into an interesting video or an interactive module. The people at APA are encouraging, friendly, approachable and happy to offer help when you need it. I’m lucky to work in a metro office that has unlimited tea, coffee, chai lattes and adjustable sit/stand desks! Getting a job at APA has taken me in a direction I never predicted, allowing me to use the skills I learnt at uni. I plan to do further study in the design area but am now also interested in exploring the design learning and development area to progress in my career with APA.”
Meet Brynne | Environmental Lead
In my job, I deal with maintaining and identifying and implementing strategic improvement opportunities for all things environment. This is currently focused on refining energy emissions reporting, data management enhancements, including Geographic Information Systems, and coordinating the development of APA Environmental Standards and training materials.
Previously, I looked after environmental management, specifically for Infrastructure Development projects across APA. This could mean coordinating ecological assessments, applying for licences and permits, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation and reporting requirements, or advising on the rehabilitation of a site.
Overall, it’s about managing the risk of APA activities on the environment, and ensuring we are minimising our impacts and working in line with best practices.
I have recently moved into a leadership position with two team members and I am excited at the opportunity to develop my skills, as well as support those in my team.
I have also been lucky enough to start a mentor relationship with an APA General Manager, and I am looking forward to being able to pass on my knowledge by mentoring graduates or undergraduates in the future.
Since starting as a graduate, APA has been a great place to grow and develop my career. I have always been given full responsibility for my tasks, access to external training and great mentors. Extension to my role and further development has been possible; for example, a transfer to Queensland and secondment to other parts of the business.
I have been with APA for several years now, and there are lots of employees who have been here a lot longer: this speaks a lot about the work environment here.
