Environment & Sustainability

At AACo, sustainability isn’t a trend – it’s a responsibility. We believe in taking care of our land, our animals, and our planet to ensure a stronger future for the next generation. For us, it’s about more than just good business – it’s about doing what’s right, and leaving the land better than we found it.

Sustainability means making informed, future-focused choices today so that tomorrow’s world is more resilient, more productive, and more in balance with nature.

What We’re Focused On

We’ve identified five key areas where we’re taking action to make a real, lasting impact:

1️⃣ Carbon in the Landscape

We’re working on innovative ways to capture carbon in the soil and vegetation. This helps us tackle climate change while building more productive and drought-resilient farms.

2️⃣ Protecting Natural Capital

As stewards of millions of hectares across Northern Australia, we’re taking measurable steps to protect biodiversity and maintain healthy landscapes – because a thriving natural environment supports everything we do.

3️⃣ Reducing Methane Emissions

Cattle naturally produce methane, which contributes to climate change. By introducing a seaweed-based feed supplement, we’re helping reduce emissions – one of the biggest breakthroughs in sustainable beef production.

4️⃣ Animal Health & Welfare

We’re raising the bar on animal welfare by creating high standards for how animals are treated across our operations. It’s about respect, responsibility, and producing food ethically.

5️⃣ The Wylarah Institute

Our innovation hub, the Wylarah Institute, is accelerating the next generation of ideas in ag. We’re fast-tracking science and technology that helps the industry adapt, evolve, and thrive – all while valuing nature.

Why It Matters

The future of agriculture is in your hands – and ours. Whether you’re thinking about your next steps in study, work, or life on the land, we want you to know this: at AACo, we’re committed to creating a world where farming works with nature, not against it.

Because the choices we make today shape the world we all share tomorrow.

Meet James

Processing Manager, Brisbane

What was your background before joining AACo?

I grew up on a beef cattle property near Crookwell NSW where my family run a Normande/Charolais cross breed. I am the 7th generation of the Carter family to grow up at Lake Edward which has the oldest registered fire brand in Australia. After moving to Brisbane to finish school, I completed a carpentry apprenticeship. I began my journey back into ag towards the end of my apprenticeship by starting at EC Rural working in Sales and Production.

Where did you start in the business and tell us a bit about your career journey with AACo?

I started at AACo as a Livestock and Production Officer where I really learnt my craft in red meat processing. After less than 2 years in the role, I was prompted to an Assistant Production Manager and 2 years after that to Processing Manager. I now lead a team, manage two service kills, and ensure all aspects of AACo’s premium branded beef program are met over the 1,000hd+ of Wagyu we process every week, which are to be delivered to our customers around the world.

What are your top tips for someone starting in the Agriculture industry?

If I was to give advice to someone coming into Agriculture, I would say be open to everything and anything, work hard and ask as many questions as you can (there is no such thing as a dumb question). Study the craft you are in with the goal of becoming a subject matter expert, as you will reap the rewards further down the track. Be patient as opportunities will always pop up, get comfortable being uncomfortable and don’t be afraid of change. This industry is full of diverse career paths and a fully integrated supply chain like AACo it is a great place to find out where you want to end up in the ag industry, as AACo covers every possible role in the beef industry.

What is your favourite AACo property and why?

It would have to be Dalgonally, as this was the first property I went to as a part of AACo’s employee challenge and it opened my eyes to the scale of graziers in the North. The skill and care required to manage these incredible animals and their mentality of taking care of the land to leave it better than AACo found it is very inspiring. It was also where I met my soon to be wife.

Meet Brenton

Operations Manager – Aronui Feedlot

What was your background before joining AACo?

I grew up in Tamworth, NSW, and went to school in Maryborough, where I was actively involved in the agriculture program, which gave me the opportunity to participate in local shows and carcass competitions as part of the cattle team.

After finishing school, I attended Emerald Agricultural College, where I completed multiple qualifications in Agriculture. During college, I worked in the Emerald Salesyards, this role taught me the importance of building strong relationships with stakeholders and highlighted the critical role of data integrity in the industry.

Where did you start in the business, and tell us a bit about your career journey with AACo?

I joined AACo with little to no experience in feedlot operations and started as a Livestock Hand at Aronui Feedlot. My passion for lot feeding quickly grew as I saw the benefits of grain-fed cattle firsthand and the opportunity to ride my horses daily was a huge bonus.

I had multiple promotions in the Livestock team eventually moving into the Livestock Manager role. In that role, I discovered a real passion for helping others achieve their goals and for lifting the capability of the team. I’ve been fortunate to access some great opportunities to grow and develop within the industry. I strongly believe that if you give something a go, you can never truly fail.

Today, I’ve been in the role of Operations Manager for three years. While my day-to-day is very different from when I first arrived at Aronui, my passion for animal care and team development remains the same.

What are your top tips for someone starting in the agriculture industry?

Jump in and have a go. Ask questions, people in this industry are more than happy to share their knowledge, and that knowledge is what keeps agriculture evolving. If an opportunity comes your way, take it. What’s the worst that could happen? Every experience, especially those outside your comfort zone, builds your confidence and capability.

Remember, the less you know, the more you’re able to learn, so stay open-minded. Don’t limit your view of what agriculture is. Just because you’re not working with cattle, crops, or tractors every day doesn’t mean you’re not making an impact in the ag industry.

What is your favourite AACo property and why?

My favourite AACo property is Aronui Feedlot, not only because it’s home for my family, but also because of its incredible history. Aronui is Australia’s oldest commercial feedlot, which is an achievement in itself. But more than that, it’s the people and the cattle that make this place special. They’re the reason I love what I do and why I chose a career in agriculture.

Meet Caiti

Breeding & Genetics Advisor, Brisbane

What was your background before joining AACo?

I grew up in Brisbane with no direct connections to the agricultural industry, but I have always had a strong passion for animals and a keen curiosity for the agricultural industry. This passion and curiosity led me to study Equine Science and Agribusiness at UQ Gatton where I was able to combine my love for animals and gain a deeper understanding of agriculture. Once I finished university I was ready to get out into the industry and kick start my career in the industry and that’s when I landed my spot in AACo’s Graduate Program.

Where did you start in the business, and tell us a bit about your career journey with AACo?

I joined AACo through the graduate program, which gave me the opportunity to explore the business from the ground up. My first year was spent on station before moving into our Livestock data team. Spending six months in each rotation gave me the opportunity to experience so much – cattle handling, pasture management, breeding programs and recording and interpreting livestock data.

For my final rotation, I joined the Breeding and Genetics team, working on a range of exciting projects like the Embryo Transfer Program. After the program, I was fortunate to step into a full-time role as Breeding and Genetics Advisor. Now, I help support the breeding and genetics team in the office and on station, and help run our artificial reproduction programs.

What are your top tips for someone starting in the agriculture industry?

My biggest piece of advice in simple: say yes. Say yes to every opportunity which comes your way – you never know who you will meet, what you will learn or where it might lead you. My other top tip is to be a sponge. Soak up everything, Ask questions, listen closely and learn from the people around you.

What is your favourite AACo property and why?

It’s hard to pick a favourite, but Canobie Station stands out. It was the first property I ever lived and worked on, the property and people were unforgettable. That said, Glentana Station in Central Queensland is a close second – it is so picturesque with rolling hills in all directions, beautiful wildlife and incredible sunsets.

Meet Meg

Legal Counsel, Brisbane

What was your background before joining AACo?

My career journey has been a colourful one! I started my career in Civil Construction before I chose to study law at Griffith on the Gold Coast. While studying, I gained valuable experience in the HR and legal teams at Billabong’s head office in Burleigh.

After graduating, I began my official legal career at a commercial law firm working in construction law, technology contracting and privacy law. I left Allens to spend a year exploring Australia with my husband in a rooftop tent and returned to legal practice with boutique commercial firm Talbot Sayer, eventually I found my way to AACo, and I haven’t looked back!

Where did you start in the business, and tell us a bit about your career journey with AACo?

I joined AACo as Legal Counsel, based at our Skyring head office. Having worked with AACo as a client during my time in private practice, stepping into the business felt like a real full-circle moment.

The Legal Counsel role provides a unique opportunity to be involved in strategic decisions across all areas of the business. This enables me to work on extremely interesting and complex legal matters in various disciplines of law, and to work with exceptionally experienced people from AACo’s diverse range of business units.

What are your top tips for someone starting in the agriculture industry?

Stay curious and be open to learning. One of the things I’ve found most striking about this industry is how willing people are to share their time and expertise, especially with those who are genuinely interested and have a passion to learn more about agriculture. Ask questions, build relationships, and take every opportunity to learn from those around you. There’s a wealth of knowledge in this industry, and people are incredibly generous with it.

What is your favourite AACo property and why?

I’ve been extremely fortunate to visit several of our properties in my relatively short time with AACo, and each one has offered something unique. If I had to pick a favourite, I’d have to say Wylarah – seeing the combination of mixed farming, breeding, and backgrounding operations in action really brought to life the scale and complexity of what we do as a business.
