Culture at Bupa

Our culture is brought to life by our people, in everything they do. This shows up in the way we truly listen to understand, so we can passionately advocate for our customer’s needs. It’s how we make things easy, simplify the complex and always act as a helping hand; working together to deliver the best value, outcomes and experiences.

But we’re also big on the small things. It’s the way we welcome every new person or customer. The buzz we bring to our offices, stores and clinics; and the warmth we create in our care homes. The way we strive to be extraordinary in the eyes our customers through every interaction.

We’re a team of extraordinary individuals with one big heart in the shape of a little blue cube. When you join Bupa, you’ll be a part of a culture that’s meant for everyone. This means we’re continually building an environment that embraces all experiences, all voices and all backgrounds. It’s not just ticking boxes. Life at Bupa is all about enhancing your wellbeing and sense of belonging, no matter who you are on the outside or inside. Because supporting you to show your full potential, will let you add your own shine to an inclusive culture we are all proud to be part of.

At Bupa, we have four employee networks (so far!)

The Pride group for LGBTQ+ employees and allies, the AccessAbility group for employees with lived experience of disability, carers and allies, and the First Nations Australian group for employees who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and allies, and the Women at Bupa group for women, those who identify as non-binary and allies. Our Employee Advocacy Groups are a safe place for people with lived experience to come together as a community to influence change for a more inclusive workplace.

LGBTQIA+ at Bupa

Bupa cares about creating and sustaining an inclusive workplace for LGBTQ+ employees where team members feel they belong regardless of gender identity, including how one chooses to express it, and sexual orientation.

Some of the ways that Bupa supports the community include;

  • Continuing to benchmark the progress and impact of our LGBTQ+ inclusion initiatives through the Australian Workplace Equality index, and in 2023, Bupa was recognised as a Bronze Tier Employer for LGTBQ+ inclusion
  • Membership with Pride in Diversity
  • Ongoing inclusion and allyship training
  • The Pride Employee Advocacy Group acknowledges and celebrates annual days of significance for the LGBTQ+ community such as IDAHOBIT and Wear it Purple Day with a range of internal events and opportunities.

First Nations Peoples

In line with our purpose, Bupa’s vision for reconciliation is an Australia where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people enjoy equity and equality, and are living longer, healthier, happier lives as we work together to make a better world.

Through our 2023-26 Stretch RAP, we will pursue our vision by focusing on four key areas that we believe will make a meaningful contribution to reconciliation.

First Nations Health Outcomes:

We will partner with, support and empower First Nations led health organisations to drive improved health outcomes for and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

Sustainable Careers:

We’ve developed a comprehensive First Nations Employment Strategy that is driving our efforts to increase the recruitment, retention and progression of First Nations employees within our businesses.

Supplier Diversity:

We’re ramping efforts to increase our procurement spend with First Nations businesses and suppliers through a dedicated First Nations Procurement Strategy.

Cultural Learning:

We’re proud of the growth we’ve made as a business in building the cultural awareness, understanding and competency of our people. We will continue to train and empower our workforce with new development opportunities and experiences to continue to grow inclusive and culturally safe environments for our people.

People Living Disability

People with disability are an integral part of our society and bring a wealth of talent, perspective, and innovation to our communities. By creating inclusive spaces and celebrating their achievements, we empower everyone to reach their full potential and live fulfilling lives. Bupa Australia’s Access and Inclusion plan sets out our commitments to removing unintended barriers that may impact our employees, customers and residents. The plan focuses on 4 key focus areas where we aim to make meaningful and sustainable impact: Our People, Accessibility & Choice, Employer of Choice and Community.

Pillar One – Our People

Creating a truly accessible and inclusive workplace starts with our people.
We believe in shared accountability for fostering an inclusive workplace that ensures our people feel safe, valued, respected, and empowered to participate to their full potential.

Pillar Two – Accessibility & Choice

Customers are at the heart of everything we do at Bupa. We set high standards to provide our customers with a dignified experience, be it online or in person. This includes our physical and digital spaces, and our products and services.

Pillar Three – Employer of Choice

We are committed to attracting talent that is representative of our customers and communities, ensuring our recruitment process has addressed any unintended barriers. We strive to foster an environment where people have access to the tools and resources needed to succeed.

Pillar Four – Community

We believe that our work in Accessibility and Inclusion will thrive when we partner with the right people, communities, and organisations.Partnerships will assist us in identifying and understanding the diverse needs and unique challenges of the communities that we serve and building a network of shared commitment and responsibility, based on common values.
