Water plays such a huge role in all of our lives. Yes, we need it to keep ourselves clean and hydrated, but it also contributes to a lot of classic Aussie summer activities. Just think of water balloon fights, DIY waterslides, and trips to the pool with your friends! Essentially, what we’re saying is that water is great and that we can’t wait to get behind this year’s National Water Week!
To kick off celebrations Explore Careers-style; we’re taking this opportunity to educate you about why National Water Week is so important and how you could land an incredible water-based career with one of our employer partners! Sounds good? We thought so!
To get involved in this year’s festivities, all you need to do is settle in, get comfy, and keep reading. We’ll do the rest!
What is National Water Week?
National Water Week is a super-underrated event hosted by none other than the Australian Water Association (otherwise known as the AWA). Every year they make a splash across the country by ‘inspiring communities and organisations to work together on water issues and future fixes.’
What’s more, it also pushes another super important message: that we need to be mindful of our water usage and never take it for granted. After all, there are so many parts of the world that aren’t able to access fresh, clean water.
Why is National Water Week Important?
The reason why we love this initiative so much is because it does a great job of highlighting what goes unnoticed so often: water-related innovation spearheaded by those in water jobs and careers!
This Year’s Theme: Accelerating Action
One of the things that makes National Water Week so exciting is that the brilliant minds behind the event think up a brilliant new theme every single year! And this year’s theme, Accelerating Action, couldn’t be more relevant to today’s climate.
Serving as ‘a powerful rally cry for our community to address water’s vital role in the current climate crisis,’ this year’s initiative is intended to ‘spark a collective movement towards a sustainable water future, taking concrete steps to bring about enduring change.’ If you ask us, it sounds like a pretty worthy cause to get behind!
What is a ‘Water Job’?
If you care about water, sustainability and innovation, a water job could be the perfect career for you! However, before we begin to explain how you can land one, we probably need to give you a ‘water job’ definition.
Those with water jobs are involved in the business of providing water and sewerage services to their communities. And while you might think that all water jobs require you to get down and dirty, that isn’t quite the case. Regardless of whether you’re tackling the administration side of the water business or taking on a hands-on water industry worker role, you’re in a water job.
