Picture this: the year is 2018, and the staff at Whiddon are going above and beyond to care for their patient (as per usual). The commendable work done by Whiddon’s aged care workers is praised within the company, but unlike other healthcare heroes, there isn’t a specific day dedicated to celebrating their work. Seems unfair, right? Whiddon thought so, too!
The Origin of Aged Care Employee Day
In response to this oversight, Aged Care Employee Day emerged as a pet project of the Whiddon family and quickly spread all over Australia! In fact, Aged Care Employee Day is now acknowledged by the ACCPA; it doesn’t get more legit than that!
Over the years, the festivities have shifted and evolved, but one core element remains; the collective recognition of the work done by aged care workers in Australia and beyond.
This Year’s Theme: Thanks For Caring
There’s a lot to love about Aged Care Employee Day, including the shifting theme (which is always a tonne of fun)! This year, the theme is Thanks for Caring, which encourages the general public to express their gratitude for the incredible work done by professional carers!
Whiddon best expressed the need to appreciate aged care workers when their representatives stated,
“We think that aged care employees are heroes. During the challenging times we have seen, our employees have shown great courage, resilience and an incredible drive to keep the wonderful people in our care safe and well. They truly have gone above and beyond to positively impact the lives of their residents and clients, even when faced with a pandemic, and I cannot thank them enough for their efforts and dedication.”
To get on-theme and celebrate, Whiddon will be providing gifts and celebration kits for all of their employees; how sweet is that? While we’re not sure what the gifts will contain, we know that the celebration kits will include value-based activities and decorations to help everyone come together and participate on the day.
Giving Thanks To Our Aged Care Heroes
One particularly cute element of this year’s celebrations is the giving thanks initiative, which can be found on the ACCPA website!
Essentially, participants can send in a ‘message of thanks’ or a video saying ‘thanks for caring’ so that aged care providers know just how much they’re appreciated! If you ask us, it’s pretty adorable (and a great way to dish out some well-earned recognition).
