Finding a job that fits around your schedule isn’t always easy. Between classes, assignments, placements and everything else that comes with studying, flexibility can make a big difference.
When a new Coles store opened close to home three years ago, Jessica saw an opportunity to find part-time work without adding a long commute to her already busy schedule.
Today, she works as a Deli Team Member while studying Primary and Secondary Education at university.
“I’m a university student studying Primary and Secondary Education. The managers here are really accommodating, so it’s easy to balance work and study. I usually work the first three days of the week and dedicate the rest of the week to my studies.”
Having a consistent routine allows Jessica to earn an income and gain workplace experience while still setting aside enough time to focus on her degree.
It also means she’s building useful skills outside the classroom, many of which will continue to help her throughout university and into her future career.
Learning New Skills in the Deli
Jessica joined Coles without previous retail experience, but that hasn’t held her back.
Like many people starting their first job, she learned what she needed to know through training, practice and support from the people around her.
“I’ve learned lots of new skills in the deli, particularly slicing products, serving customers and working with different people every day.”
There’s also plenty to learn beyond the practical side of the role.
Working in a busy store means communicating clearly, managing different priorities and staying calm when several customers need help at once. Over time, those everyday situations can help team members become more confident and comfortable working with a wide range of people.
Building Skills That Transfer Beyond Retail
One of the biggest skills Jessica has developed at Coles is problem solving.
Every customer interaction is different, and there isn’t always one standard answer or solution. Jessica has learned to listen, understand what someone needs and adapt her approach to the situation.
“You’re working with different customers every day, and every situation is different, so you learn how to solve different issues and adapt to people’s needs.”
These are skills that can be useful in almost any workplace.
For Jessica, they also complement what she’s studying at university. Communicating with different people, responding to their needs and thinking on her feet are all experiences that may prove valuable as she works towards a career in education.
A Supportive Team Makes the Difference
Although Jessica enjoys the variety of working in the deli, the best part of the job is the team she works with.
“Everyone is really friendly and easy to get along with, which makes coming to work fun. We have a great culture, and I really enjoy working here.”
Starting a new job can feel daunting, especially when it’s your first experience in retail. Having supportive teammates makes it easier to ask questions, learn from mistakes and become more confident in the role.
For Jessica, a friendly team and accommodating managers have also made it easier to balance her work responsibilities with the demands of university.
You Don’t Need Previous Experience
A lack of experience can sometimes stop young people from applying for their first job. Jessica’s advice is not to let that put you off.
“I’d say just apply. You don’t need any experience because you learn everything on the job. There are so many opportunities to learn new skills, and it’s a really rewarding place to work.”
A first job isn’t about arriving with everything figured out. It’s a chance to learn how a workplace operates, build confidence, meet new people and develop skills you can take into future roles.
