If you’re considering a career in aged care, there are two main pathways:
Home care workers look after older people in and around their homes. They provide one-on-one personal care like washing, dressing, and toileting, transportation, or domestic duties like preparing and serving a meal, cleaning or doing the laundry. Most home care service providers do not require their staff to hold a qualification. At BaptistCare, we provide all the training you need. We just ask that you have you own insured vehicle, a valid driver’s licence and a positive, caring attitude. Some roles require a Certificate III in Individual Support.
Residential carers support people who live in an aged care home. Working as part of a team, they care for residents who commonly have higher care needs than those living at home, for example those living with advanced dementia. If you choose care work in residential care, you’ll need a minimum Certificate III in Individual Support or equivalent with some facilities offering paid traineeships to support you in obtaining this qualification.
To work with older people, you will need to be kind, compassionate, and have a genuine, caring interest in your clients/residents. Ideally, you’ll bring the following skills:
Patience and respect: Most older people live at a slower pace, often with reduced physical mobility, hearing loss, or a memory that’s not quite as sharp as it used to be. Aged care workers are respectful and patient, taking time to listen carefully and repeat themselves when needed.
Empathy and a positive attitude: Older clients might be lonely or in pain, and their care worker could be the only person they interact with regularly. Demonstrating empathy, and keeping a positive, cheerful temperament can greatly benefit a clients’ mental health.
Transferrable skills: At BaptistCare, we consider a person’s skills holistically, looking at your overall life experiences and personal motivations for moving into aged care. Aged care workers are often like an extension of the family. Being warm and personable is a must.

In Australia, becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) typically requires completing an approved nursing qualification followed by registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and gaining relevant work experience.
There are several study pathways depending on your background and career goals:
The Diploma of Nursing is a shorter, practical-focused program designed to qualify students as enrolled nurses.
Many choose to progress from EN to a Bachelor of Nursing to become a registered nurse.
OR
The most direct route to RN registration.
Involves a combination of theory, simulation labs, and clinical placements.
To work as a registered nurse in Australia:
You must be registered with the NMBA.
Many nursing students work at BaptistCare while completing their studies and clinical placements, building experience as they progress towards registered nursing roles across residential aged care or home care. If you choose to work with us in catering, you’ll support residents’ wellbeing through nutritious meals, high hygiene standards, and a comfortable, dignified dining experience. This fast-paced role requires strong time management skills and attention to detail.
To succeed, you’ll be a team player who enjoys engaging with older people. Previous kitchen or cleaning experience and an understanding of work health and safety practices are highly regarded.
Many hospitality team members progress into on-site cook/chef roles or move into other areas, such as personal care.
As a member of our cleaning and laundry team, you could work in residential aged care, home care or community services, helping create clean, safe and welcoming environments for our clients.
To succeed, you’ll enjoy engaging with older people and working as part of a team. Previous cleaning experience and knowledge of work health and safety practices are preferred, along with the ability to work independently and manage physically demanding tasks.
As a lifestyle officer, you’ll help residents and clients across residential aged care, home care, community services and housing participate in social, recreational, cultural and wellbeing activities that support choice and independence.
For residential aged care roles, you’ll need a Certificate IV in Leisure and Lifestyle, or be willing to complete one, plus an Australian driver licence to assist with resident outings. Community services and housing roles require a minimum qualification in Youth Services or equivalent.
Joining our admin and customer service team puts you right in the centre of the action, providing warm, timely support to clients, residents and employees.
Whether you’re answering calls, responding to requests or assisting with everyday needs, your care and commitment help people to live well.
Preferred candidates will bring office administration experience, strong organisational and communication skills, excellent customer service, the ability to meet deadlines, and confidence using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
As a BaptistCare handyperson, gardener or maintenance officer, you’ll provide timely, quality maintenance and modification services for older people in residential properties, as well as across BaptistCare facilities and sites.
You’ll use your handyperson and gardening skills, along with strong attention to detail, to maintain lawns, gardens and complete occasional minor maintenance or modification tasks. Previous experience is preferred, and an Australian driver licence is required.

Meet Rosy, one of the passionate aged care workers making a difference at BaptistCare Maranoa.
Originally from Indonesia, Rosy began her aged care career supporting older people in their own homes. She loved the relationships she built with her clients, but after many years in home care, she decided to make the move into residential aged care.
Today, Rosy works at BaptistCare Maranoa residential aged care home in Alstonville, where she’s part of a close-knit team caring for residents living with dementia.
When she first joined Maranoa, Rosy specifically requested to work in the dementia wing. While she knew the work could be challenging, she also found it incredibly rewarding.
“I just love bringing a smile to their faces,” Rosy says. “It brings me joy to bring them joy.”
For Rosy, building strong relationships with residents and their families is one of the most fulfilling parts of the role. And that sense of connection extends to her colleagues, too.
“Maranoa feels like home, and the team there is like family. We look after each other as a team.”
Rosy says she even misses being at work on her days off, a pretty good indication of just how much her residents and her role mean to her.

Jen has been part of BaptistCare for an incredible 26 years, working across both residential aged care and home care.
Her interest in working with older people started during her first career as a hairdresser. Jen loved getting to know her senior clients, hearing their stories and learning about their lives. Before long, she realised she wanted to work more closely with seniors and decided to make a career change.
Jen joined BaptistCare Orana working in the kitchen, a move she admits felt like a big step into the unknown.
After 11 years at Orana, she was ready for a role with more hands-on interaction and joined the BaptistCare at home Central Coast team.
Today, Jen supports clients across a range of home care services, including Refresh Retreats for people living with dementia and the Transitional Aged Care Program, which helps people recover after a hospital stay.
For Jen, one of the great things about working at BaptistCare has been the opportunity to find a career path that suits her.
“BaptistCare can take you where you want to go.”
And after more than two decades, her enthusiasm for the work hasn’t gone anywhere.
“My job is amazing, and I love every day of it. I’m not just a carer; I’m a friend, an advocate… I’m the one blessed, and my job is the most rewarding way to get through life.”

Ashley Nicholls didn’t set out to work in aged care. In fact, the opportunity found him.
While visiting his grandparents at BaptistCare Maranoa Centre Aged Care Home, Ashley heard about an opening for a Resident Activities Officer. He was between jobs at the time, decided to give it a go, and two and a half years later, he’s found a role he loves.
Each day, Ashley plans activities that support residents’ physical, mental and social wellbeing. That might mean getting people moving, keeping their minds active or simply creating an opportunity to have some fun together.
And the residents aren’t shy about giving feedback.
“They’ll tell you if they think the activity is silly, and then you rethink it and go again. It’s great because the residents really drive the activities we do,” Ashley says.
One activity remains the clear favourite: bingo.
“It gets really competitive. The top players take it all very seriously, but then you get others who are there to have a lot of fun.”
At 28, Ashley is also studying a law degree and says his role at BaptistCare gives him the flexibility to balance work and study.
But it’s the people that have made the biggest impression on him.
“You get to hear their stories and see how diverse their thoughts and opinions are, and that’s great to take with you out into the world too.”
His advice for other young people considering a career in aged care is pretty simple.
“Give it a go. It’s really supportive and an area that brings people together from the heart.”

Meet Rachel, one of BaptistCare’s community support workers based in the Narralling Social and Affordable Housing community in South West Sydney.
Rachel has worked in social housing for more than 20 years and is passionate about supporting people who’ve experienced major disadvantages in life.
“As a Tailored Support Coordinator, my work has taught me that people are amazing and resilient,” she says. “Some of our residents have been through unimaginably hard times and yet are still thriving. It really makes you see the world differently.”
Rachel first entered social housing through a business traineeship at the age of 19.
“I knew I’d always wanted to work with people, and something about social housing just felt right.”
Since then, she’s continued to grow her career in the sector, supported by great managers along the way.
Today, Rachel and her team help local residents sustain their tenancies and set goals for the future.
“Ultimately, our aim is to see residents thrive, grow, and achieve their dreams,” she says.
Day to day, that might involve facilitating referrals or helping someone find employment, with each resident setting their own goals based on their individual needs and wants.
Rachel is especially passionate about supporting children in the local community and helping to break the cycle of family trauma. Some of her proudest achievements have included securing funding for programs such as after-school sport and tutoring.
While Rachel acknowledges the work can sometimes be challenging, caring deeply about the people she supports remains at the heart of why she does it.
“The moment I stop caring is the moment I need to stop working in this space.”

Gerald has worked as a Registered Nurse with BaptistCare for almost three years and brings more than 16 years of nursing experience to the team. He recently stepped into the role of Residential Care Team Manager at Caloola Centre Residential Aged Care home in Wagga Wagga.
Gerald says BaptistCare’s focus on career development has played a big part in his progression.
“BaptistCare is very good for Registered Nurses’ career development,” he says. “I was enrolled in an Infection Control course after just one year and soon became an Infection Control Lead in the care home.”
After two years, Gerald was taking on Acting Residential Manager and Care Team Manager roles, as well as working as a Nurse Educator.
“I feel that BaptistCare has really invested in my development and I’ve grown so much in this role as a result.”
Before working in aged care, Gerald worked in a transplant specialty hospital in the Philippines. He says aged care offers Registered Nurses a different kind of career experience.
“As an RN, working in aged care is very fulfilling. You have the opportunity to build long-lasting connections with residents and their families, which is very different to the fast pace of hospital work.”
Gerald also values BaptistCare’s purpose and the way its values are reflected across its teams.
“Our values, Love, Respect, Reliability, and Empowerment, are all very fitting in aged care, and our teams really do live these every day in the work that they do.”
