Mawsons Today

When it comes to supplying quality concrete and quarry products, Mawsons are specialists. Mawsons are recognised as leading construction materials suppliers with a proud reputation for innovation, technical excellence and reliability. In addition to the sites with fixed plant, Mawsons also operate mobile concrete batching and crushing and screening equipment, and have a fleet of concrete, cement and quarry delivery trucks.

Safety has always been Mawsons’ first priority. Operating modern equipment with the latest comfort and safety features helps keep Mawsons’ safety performance ahead of industry standards. Staff are always encouraged to undertake further training to improve their skills and knowledge, advance their careers, and strengthen the business.

Operating sustainably and minimising the environmental impact of our work, Mawsons implement comprehensive quarry rehabilitation programs and maintains offsets for flora and fauna on our own land. We also supply low-CO2 concrete, recycle aggregates and water, and source all mains electricity from renewable sources.

Since 2007, Mawsons has been part of a wider enterprise through our Joint Venture with Adbri and, in turn, CRH. This means that Mawsons has the backing and support of a very large global corporation in doing what we do well in regional Australia. To find out more about Mawsons, click here!

Mawsons’ departments:

  • Concrete
  • Quarry
  • Mechanical & Fabrication
  • Engineering & Technical
  • Transport
  • Administration, IT, WH&S and HR

Concrete

Concrete batch plants combine sand and stone from Mawsons’ quarries with cement, water and specialist additives, which are then mixed and delivered to construction sites in agitator trucks. Mawsons’ concrete batch plants are strategically located to serve our region. Depending on demand, there can be up to 10 agitator trucks and 15 people working at a Mawsons’ concrete plant. Jobs include truck and front-end loader drivers, batchers (who select ingredients, manage raw material supply and operate the plant), transport coordinators and managers. In smaller plants, these roles are shared amongst multi-skilled teams of 2 or 3 people. Some Mawsons’ concrete plants also offer a range of landscaping products for direct sale or delivery in smaller tip trucks.

Quarries

Stone for concrete, road and railway construction, asphalt, erosion control, dams and landscaping applications is sourced from Mawsons’ extensive quarry network. Many different types of stone are quarried. Hard rock, such as basalt, diabase, hornfels and granite, is drilled and blasted using explosives. Gravel and sand are dug directly from the ground using excavators. Once extracted, the stone material is crushed and screened to meet Australian Standard specifications for each particular product. Blending and wet mixing plants at Mawsons’ quarries ensure optimum product performance while recycling by-products and minimising any waste.

Quarry equipment is typically large. Mawsons uses dump trucks that carry loads of between 30 and 60 tonnes. The largest front-end loaders at Mawsons’ quarries can fit small cars in their buckets, and excavators weigh between 25 and 75 tonnes. There is also specialised equipment, such as rock drills and hydraulic hammers, that work in the pits to win the stone. Some quarries have crushers and screens that are permanent, others use mobile crushers and screens that travel between quarry sites as customer needs dictate.

Our quarries rely on skilled people of all ages and gender to perform a range of roles; mobile and fixed plant operators, drill and blast surveyors, mechanics, fitters and welders, transport co-ordinators and despatch staff combine as a tight to keep each quarry humming.

Mawsons operate quarries not mines; mines often use chemicals to extract and refine minerals. There is no chemical processing at Mawson quarries.

Mechanical and Fabrication

There are lots of machines at Mawsons; small and large, electric, diesel and petrol powered. Each piece of equipment has to be well-maintained to ensure its safe and efficient operation. This is where the mechanics and maintenance teams play a critical role.

Mechanics and maintenance staff are based across the business, many are kept busy in the main workshops at Cohuna, Griffith and Leeton. These workshops are equipped with modern tools and undertake all sorts of repair and rebuild work. Mobile mechanics and welders also visit production sites to carry out maintenance, repairs and plant upgrades.

A specialist team of plant design engineers and project managers undertake the planning, design and construction for much of the plant upgrade work that Mawsons are constantly undertaking, often at several sites at once.

Engineering and Technical

The products Mawsons supplies must be durable, safe, and able to do what they are expected to do. A team of civil engineers, specialised laboratory technicians and material testers are based in NATA Certified Materials Testing Facilities in Echuca and Griffith, at major quarries and concrete plants across Mawsons’ business. These people are continually refining concrete mix designs and testing concrete and quarry products against a very wide range of criteria to ensure specifications are comfortably met. Assessing new products and production techniques forms an important part of the Technical Teams’ work as Mawsons continue to keep abreast of the latest, most efficient building technologies.

Transport

On the roads, Mawsons operate a large fleet of modern concrete trucks (agitators), tip trucks and cement tankers. This equipment provides the delivery services that link our supply sources to our customers’ construction sites. The work of concrete and quarry delivery drivers might take them to remote highways, farmers’ tracks, along rivers or across valleys. Rarely are two days the same for Mawsons’ drivers, who are always in contact with their home base and manager via the satellite communication systems that are installed in each vehicle.

Administration, HR, WH&S and IT

Mawsons’ operational divisions are supported by specialist financial, IT, Human Resources and Work Health and Safety practitioners. These people play critical roles in managing the company’s finances and ensuring that the needs of our most important asset, our people, are well managed. The skills, experience and qualifications in these areas vary from home-grown experience to tertiary qualified staff who have lived experience in all sorts of businesses beyond concrete and quarries.

Offices with training facilities in Cohuna, Echuca, Bendigo, Leeton and Griffith are designed to make sure that the expert help of a specialist support person is never out of reach of an operator or manager at any Mawsons’ plant.

Mawsons is a family-run business that produces quality construction materials throughout Northern Victoria and Southern NSW. Across these regions, Mawsons are prominent players with almost 600 employees across 80 sites. Trading also as Milbrae and Country Concrete, with a history spanning over 110 years and as a Joint Venture Partner with Adbri, Mawsons are very well established and highly regarded.

Mawsons Concrete and Quarry Operational Cadetship Program started in 2023 and is designed to provide aspiring young people with comprehensive training and hands-on experience across our business’s concrete, quarry, technical, and workshop divisions. This program aims to develop a new generation of skilled workers who are ready to tackle the challenges and opportunities in the vital building and construction sectors.

The Opportunity

Continuing in 2026, Mawsons has an exciting opportunity for young regional people to complete a 10-month Cadetship program commencing in late January. Mawsons’ aim is to secure young talent into our workforce and provide development opportunities and experience to the young people in the communities in which we work.

The scheme offers up to three successful 18-25-year-old candidates a 10-month fixed-term contract of employment. After that, the objective is for each successful Cadet to potentially secure a suitable permanent, ongoing role with Mawsons, dependent on their skills, preferences, desired location, and the business needs at that time.

Each Cadet will move through four of our operational divisions: Concrete, Quarries, Workshops (Fabrication and Mechanical) and Technical. Position descriptions are attached, which outline the cadet’s duties and scope of work for each division. We seek cadets who are confident, enthusiastic and enjoy meeting new teams and learning new skills. Whilst we try to place cadets in work sites that are nearest to their residential location, there are periods of the program where cadets may be required to work away from home for the week. Mawsons covers accommodation and travel expenses as required. Each Cadet will be assigned a workplace mentor for the duration of the program to provide guidance and support. Cadets will receive a competitive wage while gaining valuable industry and workplace knowledge from our friendly and professional Mawsons teams.

Meet Joe

Since I began my cadetship at Mawsons in March this year, I have really enjoyed working in the different areas of the business.

I have found a liking in each of the areas I have rotated through, and I also enjoy the varied types of work and processes behind what is done and how tasks are performed.

Specifically, I have enjoyed meeting new, friendly faces, and my favourite task is driving the heavy vehicles at the quarries.

The cadetship has been fantastic and I have really enjoyed my time here.

I have learnt many new skills through the cadet program, and I look forward to what the future holds.

Meet Zac

I have enjoyed the opportunity that the Mawsons Cadetship program has provided. During my time as a Cadet, I have had the opportunity to meet many credible people, and I am grateful for the time they have taken to teach me new skills.

I have enjoyed working in the quarry at Glenrowan, where I have encountered a wide variety of daily tasks and gained a good insight into quarry operations. The Concrete laboratory gave me an interesting insight into the technical science behind producing concrete.

I am very thankful for the opportunity that Mawsons have given to the Cadets for the 2024 Cadetship Program. I am looking forward to the future with Mawsons.

Meet Jake

I was interested in applying for the 2024 Mawsons Cadetship Program because I could see how it would provide a huge opportunity to learn and develop new skills across an interesting and respected business in the region.

Over the course of the Cadetship Program, I have worked in the Concrete, Quarries, Mechanical, and Engineering areas of the business, and each one has provided the opportunity to learn and develop new skills. It was really interesting to see how each department of the business interacts as one.

The staff at each site took time to show me different tasks and were always very helpful. I look forward to the journey ahead.
