What kind of pro bono work does the firm engage in?

We recognise that lawyers have a moral obligation and a professional responsibility to provide legal services to those who would otherwise be without.

Our stand-alone pro bono practice is an integral part of the firm and we are passionate about supporting initiatives we believe will make a difference. We work closely with community-based legal and charitable organisations to understand the needs of our clients and to identify clients who are most likely to benefit from our services.

Our Global Social Impact Program focus areas include:

  • Assisting communities experiencing marginalisation, disadvantage, financial exclusion and/or hardship;
  • Supporting young people in their education and career journeys; • Working to eradicate all forms of modern slavery; and
  • Working together with First Nations Peoples to achieve reconciliation in Australia.

What skills do university students need to demonstrate to be a clerk at Ashurst?

What kind of tasks/ responsibilities can a clerk expect at Ashurst?

The work undertaken by clerks is varied and depends on the team you are in. Tasks include case law research, drafting legal expertise updates, note-taking during meetings and contract review. You could also be involved in attending court, drafting advice to clients.

Virtual Experience Program:

This free interactive program offers real insight into life at Ashurst. Through the program, you will hear from Ashurst lawyers and partners who will task you with work that is similar to that of our graduates and junior lawyers.

The modules included in the Australian Virtual Experience Programme include;

Ashurst (Australia) Commercial Law Virtual Experience Program

In addition to learning more about being a lawyer at a top tier Global law firm. We are keen to support people to have extraordinary careers through learning new skills and embracing your strengths.

We want our candidates, whatever your background, to have the best possible chance of success in their search for the right career. To support these first steps into the world of work, we have created a course on how to manage self-doubt and imposter feelings, so that you are set up for success when applying for opportunities at Ashurst or elsewhere.

In this Global programme, the first three tasks will walk you through the phenomenon of self-doubt and imposter feelings, and its connection to how we view ourselves. By developing this awareness, you’ll be able to better manage these feelings.

The next task asks you to define what is special about you in the context of your newfound understanding of imposter feelings and self-doubt. Finally, in your last task, you’ll be asked to practice communicating your uniqueness to an employer by explaining why you’re extraordinary and why that employer should hire you.

For some of you, describing your strengths may feel uncomfortable and even awkward but please remember that when speaking about something that is true, you should not feel any embarrassment. In an interview, only you can describe the special characteristics you possess, and practising this will be critical to ensure you are relaxed and ready to tackle this for real-life situations.
