What kind of pro bono work does the firm engage in?

We recognise that lawyers have a moral obligation and a professional responsibility to provide legal services to those who would otherwise be without.

Our stand-alone pro bono practice is an integral part of the firm and we are passionate about supporting initiatives we believe will make a difference. We work closely with community-based legal and charitable organisations to understand the needs of our clients and to identify clients who are most likely to benefit from our services.

Our Global Social Impact Program focus areas include:

  • Assisting communities experiencing marginalisation, disadvantage, financial exclusion and/or hardship;
  • Supporting young people in their education and career journeys; • Working to eradicate all forms of modern slavery; and
  • Working together with First Nations Peoples to achieve reconciliation in Australia.

What kind of tasks/ responsibilities can a clerk expect at Ashurst?

The work undertaken by clerks is varied and depends on the team you are in. Tasks include case law research, drafting legal expertise updates, note-taking during meetings and contract review. You could also be involved in attending court, drafting advice to clients.

Ashurst Virtual Work Experience Programs

The Australian program has three legal modules.

They are free, self-paced, interactive online programs that allow you to dive deeper into what work and life with Ashurst, a top-tier Global law firm, might look like.

You’ll hear from Ashurst employees and work through tasks similar to those our graduates and junior lawyers complete.

  1. Understanding Director Risk Management Advice: You’ll gain an overview of risk management in law. You’ll get an understanding of attending a client meeting and conducting research, ready to give your client the right advice for their situation.
  2. Learning about Intellectual Property Risks in Joint Ventures: You’ll discover the work that goes into joint ventures and the risks to look out for. You’ll also touch on negotiation strategy and get a chance to work on your research and negotiation skills!
  3. Attending an ACCC ‘Dawn Raid”: A ‘dawn raid’ is an unannounced visit by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). You’ll learn more about the work of the ACCC and how to support clients with a ‘dawn raid’.

Welcome to the You Are Extraordinary: Managing Self Doubt & Imposter Syndrome Virtual Work Experience Program!

We know starting work can be scary – many young people feel doubtful about their abilities and may experience imposter syndrome.

At Ashurst, we want to give all our candidates – no matter their background – the best possible chance of success. This programme is our way of helping you take your first career steps with confidence.

Who is the Program For?

The program is open to all students feeling uncertain about entering the world of work. It’s entirely online and should take between 3 and 5 hours to complete.

What You’ll Learn

The program consists of five modules divided into core activities that will aid your personal development skills ready for the workplace:

  1. Discover Self-Doubt & Imposter Feelings: You’ll be introduced to the concepts of self-doubt and imposter syndrome, what they can feel like, and how you can identify these feelings ready to move past them.
  2. Understand Factors Linked to Imposter Feelings: Many things contribute to feeling like an imposter in the workplace. You’ll learn what they are and how they might show up.
  3. Understand the Link Between Imposter Syndrome & Social Identity: You’ll get insights into how our social identity impacts how we feel about ourselves and contributes to imposter syndrome.
  4. Acknowledge Your Success: You’ll learn how to fully acknowledge and review your accomplishments with a new understanding of what ‘success’ means to you.
  5. You Are Extraordinary: You’ll gain tools to help you manage self-doubt and imposter syndrome, so you can get on in life and work confidently.
