Allycia Marsh
Senior Customer Care Supervisor
I’m Allycia, and this is my story of finding inspiration and purpose at DHL Express.
I’m currently a Senior Supervisor in the Customer Care Department at DHL Express, and I want to show you that the path to a fulfilling career isn’t always a straight line.
One of the things I love about my company is our mission to connect people and improve lives. We’re always striving to enhance our processes and make our customers’ experiences better. What’s truly amazing is that, at DHL Express, everyone, no matter their role or job title, is considered equal. We’re not just co-workers; we’re part of the big red and yellow family.
While DHL Express is a part of the DHL Group, and we are better known for moving freight from one place to another, but we’re more than that. We’re deeply connected to our communities through special projects that go beyond business:
Go Green: We’re committed to environmental sustainability, reducing waste, and building a better future. We’re on a mission to be 0% emissions by 2050, always keeping the planet in mind.
Go Help: In times of disaster, we don’t just watch from the sidelines. We leap into action, providing relief and sending our own disaster response teams to those in need. We believe in making a real impact.
Go Teach: We empower children and young people, helping them gain employability skills and the confidence they need to prepare for the world of work and live an independent life.
We’ve all been asked the question at a young age, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s a question that can bring immense pressure and anxiety. It’s okay not to have all the answers. I certainly didn’t.
Now, let me share something personal. At the start of my journey, I didn’t have a clear vision of what I wanted to do, and honestly, I’m not entirely sure I do now. But that’s okay. It’s okay not to have your whole life mapped out. What matters is the drive to explore and discover your path.
My turning point came when a close friend working at DHL Express in 2006 couldn’t stop talking about how much she loved her job. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and it sparked something in me.
At the age of 21, I decided to take a chance and applied to become a Customer Service Advisor within the front-line call center. After a successful application process, I quickly realized that DHL was not just a place to work; it’s a place to grow. The possibilities for personal and professional development were endless.
With the right personal mindset, guidance from those around me, and unwavering determination, I’ve not only met but exceeded my own personal expectations within the company. Starting in Front Line Customer Service, I ventured into various roles and even managed key account customers. My journey led me to become a 2IC, then a Learning and Development Consultant, which gave me the incredible opportunity to travel to Singapore and meet colleagues from around the globe.
From there, I stepped into a supervisor role where I received additional support and growth opportunities through our internal Supervisor programs. These opportunities allowed me to network with colleagues from all corners of the country. My journey eventually led me to my current role as a Senior Supervisor, where I was nominated and won Supervisor of the year in 2022. Winning that award presented me with yet another amazing opportunity – to travel abroad and celebrate my success with other top performers from our region.
This journey has shown me that opportunities are endless, and your career can be a series of incredible adventures.
The point of my story is this: your career journey may not be a straight line, and that’s okay.
It’s about embracing opportunities, taking chances, and finding your passion along the way. The most important thing is to keep moving forward, learning, and growing. Who knows, the job you never thought you’d have could be the one that inspires you every day. So, don’t be afraid to explore, discover, and chase your dreams. Your path may surprise you, just as mine did for me at DHL Express. Your journey might be filled with opportunities you can’t even imagine right now, so keep striving, and you’ll achieve remarkable things!
Bella Du
CUSTOMS BROKER
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE?
My organization is DHL Express in Australia, and I am a Customs Broker.
I specialise in facilitating the smooth importation of goods across the Australian border by ensuring shipments comply with customs laws and regulations. Working closely with customs, I act on behalf of importers to reduce the risk of delays and penalties. I also provide guidance and advice to importers and exporters on various trade-related matters, including duty-saving opportunities, trade compliance, and regulatory changes that may impact their international shipments.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
I open my emails and check for the highest priority tasks that need actioning. Since I am the bridge between clients and customs, I have to communicate with them as soon as possible. Then I move on to new jobs in the system. For every shipment I check that it has the necessary documentation, such as invoices, permits, and certificates of origin. If those are ready, I do the clearance: preparing customs entries, calculating taxes, and paying taxes on client’s behalf. If there are any issues I communicate with customs officers and/or the client to provide advice. This is a job that requires rigorous attention to detail. It stays interesting as there are always new challenges and problems that need solving.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR ORGANISATION?
I have been in the logistics industry for 10 years with the plan of becoming a customs broker. Broking requires experience with many different aspects of customs clearance. DHL Express is very different to other forwarders because we have global reach and deal with everyone from multinationals to niche business clients through to individual consumers. As such, the range of clearance activities is vast, from food to daily necessities, to industrial equipment parts, and perishable goods. I am a part of multiple teams – the Prohibited import (PI) team, the Evidence of Money Price (EMPP) team, and the Quarantine team. I developed the skills necessary to progress from a Customs Support Agent to classifying and then to broking. I feel lucky to have benefited from the unique opportunities that working at DHL provides.
WHAT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT DHL?
Most people know that DHL transports goods, but they aren’t aware of the many procedures involved in export and import customs clearance. Simple delivery is not that simple, no matter how small the item. DHL is so fast and efficient that all of these complex tasks are completed silently from the customer’s point of view. But there is a huge amount of experience and expertise working behind the scenes to get it Right First Time, as we say.
WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT DHL?
I think that no matter what your individual strengths are, or your personality type, at DHL you can find the ideal position for you. Whether you just want to do a good job quietly, or keep advancing your career, you will find opportunities. That’s the beauty of this company. DHL has so many departments with different teams and positions that require different specific talents and abilities. You can always find the something new to learn and something that is the right fit.
WHAT IS THE WORK CULTURE LIKE AT DHL?
DHL is like a big family. The working environment is very professional but also very warm, and team members support one another. I am an immigrant who is not a native speaker of English and at DHL I feel as though I belong. I don’t feel any different to others. We often have team building events outside of work, dinners, outdoor activities, and family days.
IS DHL A FLEXIBLE PLACE TO WORK?
Yes, many of us can work from home, and the company is open to discussing changes to working hours when individual life circumstances change. In my experience, compared to other employers, DHL will go above and beyond to find a suitable solution that works for both parties. The company really looks after the welfare of their employees.
WHAT TYPE OF SKILLS AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES IS YOUR ORGANIZATION LOOKING TO EMPLOY?
DHL likes to hire people who take responsibility for their work and have a passion for providing a good service to customers. It is helpful if you enjoy solving problems and are able to stay calm under pressure. Other than that, to be someone who generally gets along well with others and is always ready to support your team.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SELF?
Don’t be anxious about the future. Just make your own plan and follow it at your own pace. All you need to do is find something that you are good at and stick with it. There is satisfaction in doing things well, no matter how humble the role. Just keep working hard and eventually you will be rewarded with a chance to shine and get somewhere in life.
Bradley Elms
CUSTOMS DUTY MANAGER
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE?
I work at DHL Express as a Customs Duty Manager. I started my DHL journey 10 years ago as an entry level “Clearance Support Agent” (CSA) and have worked my way through the business as a Supervisor, a Manager, and have gained my formal Customs Broker license as part of a work-based traineeship.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
My current role is leading our brokerage team to clear imported shipments efficiently and quickly to ensure we can meet our delivery deadline and our customer promise. Import customs clearance involves reviewing commercial invoice documentation, paying relevant duty and tax, and assessing whether the goods being imported are prohibited or restricted – think about the quarantine bins at the airport.
I help my team by working with our leadership group to solve complex problems with our internal processes, engaging with other DHL operational departments to connect import clearance to delivery, and work with government stakeholders from Australian Border Force and Department of Agriculture to ensure that we are staying compliant, while facilitating global trade.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING WITH DHL?
One of the best things about DHL is that we have the best people to work with in the world, especially in the customs team! The average length of time people stay in our department is 10 years, and it is truly because of how great DHL as a company is to work for.
I love the “can-do” spirit of everyone in the DHL family! No matter what department you work for, everyone has the attitude to help each other out to get the results for our customers. The functional leadership team regularly engage in workshops with the front line and our customers to ensure that we are consistently improving as a business.
The business has also been incredibly resilient and flexible throughout COVID; as the world navigated the worst pandemic of the last century, as an essential business we had to keep going and finding ways to ensure that we could continue to deliver lifesaving medical equipment and PPE, aircraft parts, and personal shipments connecting loved ones from across the globe, and we have grown closer as a team because of this. One fun fact about DHL – our very own customs team were responsible for clearing and delivering the COVID vaccines!
WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT DHL?
When I was applying for jobs, DHL stood out for me as it was a big multinational company and presented a wide range of opportunities for growth and development. While I initially thought a job in the customs team would mean I would be doing what they do on the “Border Watch” TV show, I quickly realised that it would be so much more than that. Through my leadership pathway, I got the opportunity to embark on a multi-year supervisory course which taught me valuable skills like training facilitation, business acumen, and people management, and also allowed me great opportunities to connect with colleagues in other departments around the country who were going through the same training course that I was.
WHAT TRAITS ARE DHL LOOKING FOR IN PEOPLE?
When I look for people who are a good fit for our business, I see curiosity as being a very valuable asset – Customs is complicated at times, and being able to take a step back and really question why we do things is a great mentality to have, especially when situations are novel or ambiguous. The government is starting to adopt more of a digitalised mindset, and as we continue to improve our business processes in the same way, having the willingness to try something new is also incredibly important.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SELF?
The advice that I would give my former high-school self is “don’t try to be what others want you to be”
I attended a selective high school where all of my colleagues were achieving high marks and going off to attend university in law and science, and when I got to year 12 I was left wondering “what should I do with myself?”. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I followed my schoolmates enrolled in university hoping to find my path. After attending university for a short year and a half, I realised that all along academics and acquiring degrees and study time wasn’t for me, so I set out to do something more practical which is where I found my career in DHL. There is increasing pressure now a days to commence formal study straight out of high school, and I can tell you that there is no shame is treading a different path – trying something different, changing learning pathways, or foregoing university altogether until the time is right can all be great ways of finding your true passion in your career.
Carla Gorla
SECURITY MANAGER – COMPLIANCE AND RESILIENCE
Who is your organization and what do you do?
I work for DHL Express as the Security Manager – Compliance and Resilience.
My role supports the business in ensuring compliance with various security standards including those regulated by the Department of Home Affairs. I also provide support in managing the Organizational Resilience Program for DHL Express, ensuring the business is best prepared and equipped to handle any type of disruption.
So what do you do? What is a day in the life like for you?
A ‘day in the life’ for me is a mixture of planned and unplanned events. Working within the Security Team, there is always something new happening and this is what makes each day interesting. You never know quite what you are going to get!
Planned events would include tasks like: conducting compliance activities and audits, travelling to our facilities around Australia, meeting with Regulators and suppliers, reviewing and developing policies and documents, working with our operations teams on improving compliance to drive better security outcomes, developing, and exercising business continuity plans to ensure we are ready to handle any disruptions that may arise minimising the impact to operations.
What do you love most about your organisation? What makes it so special? Why is it the greatest place on earth to work? Give me 3 good reasons.
I have been working for DHL for almost 3 years now and I have not looked back. In my current role I am made to feel like a valued member of the team. 3 good reasons why I love working at DHL:
The people and the culture – I have worked for a number of different companies throughout my career (including running my own business) and the people and culture at DHL are far superior to anything I have previously experienced. When I first started at DHL, I was surprised to see how many staff had been with the company for 10, 20, 30+ years – longevity is a testament to the culture.
The diversity – DHL recognizes and embraces the diversity of its people. Diversity is seen as an asset at DHL.
The opportunities – As the ‘world’s most international company’ the opportunities are endless. You can name any place in the world that you would like to go and DHL is more than likely there. DHL encourages and supports the continuous development of its people and there are so many different and varied roles available.
Tell us something most people wouldn’t know about your organisation
When you first start with DHL the company pays for you to attend ‘Global Induction’. This a week-long learning opportunity to introduce you to the world of DHL and the people. At the end of induction, you become a ‘Certified International Specialist’. This really reflects how DHL invests in its people, setting them up for success from the very start.
Why did your organisation stand out to you when you were applying for your job?
Aside from the massive international footprint of the company and the future opportunities this brings, the values of DHL really resonated with me. The guiding principle of ‘Connecting People, Improving Lives’ gives purpose and stood out to me as something I really wanted to be a part of.
What type of skills and personal attributes is your organisation looking to employ?
I believe a ‘can-do’ spirit and positive attitude is a great place to start. Skills can be taught, a willingness to learn and adapt is priceless.
What advice would you give your former high school self?
Believe in yourself and your abilities. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do at this point in your life, be open to opportunities and embrace change. Through experience you will know where you fit and where you will succeed and grow to be the best version of you.

I work for DHL Express in the operations function and am the Senior Director for National Ground Operations, overseeing all facets of shipments pick-up and delivery.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

The people make the day, the month, the year, and the company. Everyone works together, helps, and participate in all aspects, no one leaves you to struggle through anything, many hands make light work.

WHAT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT DHL?
Something most people won’t know about DHL is that the role you start in, isn’t necessarily what you will always do. We train, develop, provide educational assistance to be what ever you want to be. At DHL, we have many roles and departments, from operations, to customer service, finance, engineering, Information technology, security and infrasture and the list goes on. I have made life long friends at DHL, both nationally and internationally, and often socialise outside of the work environment and have so many commonalities with so many of my collegues.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SELF?
If I was to give my high school self some advice, it would be to not get bogged down on test results, pass or fail, but to embrace developmental opportunities. Be the best version of yourself, you are unique and striving to be better will deliver results, opportunities and rewards you havent even thought of.
Meet Jennifer
Security Operations Coordinator
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE?
I work for DHL Express in the Security team and my role is Security Operations Coordinator. I am responsible for managing security systems and delivery of security projects, coordinating the SecureLine product and other high-value shipment notifications, supporting facility-level security compliance activities, and supporting both the Compliance Manager & Security Intelligence and Risk Manager with shipment security tasks and compliance.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
Everyday tasks will be varied but will always involve health checks on all security systems, engagement with operations on security projects, repair and maintenance, training, and compliance. There will be random days or a week in a month when SecureLine Operation becomes my only priority.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR ORGANISATION?
I have worked for DHL Express for 20 years and DHL has always been for me, a company with a heart. I love the warmth of people. When I first entered the reception door at the old DHL in Riordan Street to meet my team leader Joan Rizvi, I was greeted with a huge smile and great hospitality and can clearly remember as if it happened only yesterday, the phrase in my head was “ I want to be part of this happy family “ and so I have been.
The constant evolution of DHL culture makes it a great place to work for. I have seen throughout the years the evolution of the culture to where we are now. Sometimes it feels like a roller coaster ride, there were challenges but every one that is from the top to the frontline worked together to resolve them, there was also a lot of fun which makes challenges easier. Our organization does listen to the voice of its people whether staff or customers, acts and resolves, and always finds ways to make things even better.
Lastly, adaptability especially to external challenges, DHL looks after its people, and we have a very responsible organization and intelligent management that genuinely looks after our business very well to avoid mass layoffs and I am very grateful to be part of this organisation.
WHAT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT DHL?
DHL supports disaster programs assisting international communities. DHL has Individual Development Plan (IDP) to map your next future role. DHL provides a lot of opportunities not just internally but also externally. We have few programs like internships or work experience for high school. DHL is a big ocean that one must navigate but don’t fret, you will be guided on how to read the compass along the way of your career journey, you just need to bring a positive attitude, and genuineness, learn, and gain skills, be seen/network, and one day you will end up to where you want to be.
IS DHL A FLEXIBLE PLACE TO WORK?
More than 100% flexible to be able to do your work properly. DHL provides flexibility especially if there is an emergency. In my role, for example, I am allowed to work at any facility to support the site, build connections and get the feel on the ground for any security grievances. I can also work from home in case there is an emergency or if I have Secureline Operation which can be late at night or very early morning. I love the very flexible working arrangement.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SELF?
Believe in yourself and your abilities, learn, build relationships with people, enjoy the journey and keep moving forward.
Meet Junior
PROCUREMENT AND CONTRACTS MANAGER
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE?
My organisation is DHL, and I work in the Express division. I work as a Procurement and Contracts Manager. This newly created role is responsible for overseeing compliance and managing the contractual obligations of our Service Partners. They deliver thousands of parcels to our customer’s homes and businesses across the country daily.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
After a good strong coffee, I quickly browse my emails, looking for any priority tasks. I would add these to my list of things to do while also considering any meetings and conference calls scheduled for that day. After that, ensure our compliance systems are checked and approvals made or initiate a further investigation as required. It is essential to be well organised for this role as hundreds of Service Partners and different challenges impact our many Service Centres (where Service Partners) operate from who require my support. Some days are uneventful, while others need an urgent site visit or a meeting to deal with an exciting development. I am still learning something new and being challenged every day.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING WITH DHL?
I love that I have been fortunate to work in different roles with DHL. I am picking up skills in other areas, which I think is making me a well-rounded professional more and more each day. I love that I am free to work and operate in the way that I feel most productive and efficient.
It is unique because while we are a massive global company, we still value and treat our colleagues like a vital part of our business, and we are very proud to work for a company that values us in return.
We value our people, and we want them to be happy working for us
We value our reputation as being a trustworthy business and doing good for the world
We have a global brand presence like no other
WHAT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT DHL?
While we operate only cargo-only aircraft, we still have more aircraft than passenger airline Qantas.
WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT DHL?
I started with DHL within the Network Control Group (NCG) in a part-time role while studying for a degree in IT. As an NCG Agent, our role was to coordinate the busy nighttime import and export freight movements located at the airport gateway facility. After graduating, I worked full-time in IT until a Cargo Operation Performance Analyst role came up at DHL, which I was urged to apply for and later offered. I chose to change careers and work full-time for DHL because it was unlike other employers. The Christmas parties were enjoyable, and people were largely happy coming to work on different days of the year!
Since my first full-time role with DHL, I have continued my DHL journey working as a Transport Manager for a few years and then to my current role as Procurement and Contracts Manager. Let’s see where DHL takes me next.
IS DHL A FLEXIBLE PLACE TO WORK?
Yes, I find there is flexibility at work, and it has become more so since the pandemic. I choose to spend more time on site nowadays, and I am lucky to have the choice to work either at home or in the office. Any role is flexible as long as you’re responsible for your work and ensures that what needs to be done is always done to a good standard.
WHAT IS THE OFFICE CULTURE LIKE AT DHL?
I have a desk-based role, so the office can be noisy or quiet. It’s always good to have some activity from time to time, or else you might as well work from home again, right? It’s always nice to say good morning to colleagues when they come in or even stop by for a brief chat to see how things are going. I also regularly visit our other facilities, and it’s a nice change of scenery and meet our colleagues there too.
WHAT TRAITS ARE DHL LOOKING FOR IN PEOPLE?
I can only speak for my roles. I think some good skills and attributes to have are;
having the ability to get along with a wide range of people
Being able to deal with multiple priority tasks at the same time
Remaining cool and calm under challenging situations
Seeing the good in every situation
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SELF?
To take the advice of my high school careers adviser as they saw my strengths which were not apparent to me until later. Everything will work out as long as you stay positive, work hard and persist in pushing for what you want. Keep a list of your goals and review it frequently. Don’t be scared to make mistakes.
Meet Noleen
SERVICE QUALITY ANALYST
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE?
My organisation is DHL Express in Australia, and I am a Service Quality Analyst.
I manage various databases to ensure their information is up to date and accurate since our customers and DHL Customer Service rely on this information daily.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
A typical day for me is running reports to check our delivery performance from the previous day and other KPIs. I then see how we are tracking and offer advice on improving any of our key performance areas. I also attend to daily queries from multiple departments within DHL, like Sales queries and Operations requests to make updates. I enjoy many challenges and keeping busy; hence I am part of the WHS Committee, a First Aider, Fire Warden and participate in various projects, all striving to improve our service to our internal and external customers.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING WITH DHL?
The thing I like most about my organisation is that we constantly strive to be the best in the world at what we do with the various programs we have. This makes it unique because DHL looks after its staff with opportunities, flexibility and fantastic rewards. It’s also a global brand that when you see it at the Grand Prix on TV, down the beach with Surf Life Saving or in publications, you feel incredibly proud to be part of the big yellow machine that Connects People and Improves Lives.
WHAT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT DHL?
Something you wouldn’t know about DHL Express here in Australia is that we offer so much to our staff, such as subsidies to our team for Health & Well Being and Travel, on-site Physios, food trucks and BBQs. This shows that DHL sees the importance of their staff’s health and happiness.
WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT DHL?
When I applied for my job at DHL, the one thing that stood out the most was the people and their passion for such a unique service back in the day! We were a worldwide door-to-door courier service pioneer and continue to be a pioneer in other areas, such as setting Zero Emissions targets.
WHAT IS THE WORK CULTURE LIKE AT DHL?
The work culture is very much like a big family where everyone looks out for each other, especially with Safety 1st and, more recently, for our Mental Health. DHL is very flexible with its working hours and working from home where possible.
The office is open plan, various ages and diversities work there, and all respect personal space and noise volumes. There’s often some fun banter and catch-ups about our family members, what we did on the weekend, who won the footy, and even what our pets are up to. This all helps makes the workplace a relaxing and welcoming environment to work in.
WHAT TRAITS ARE DHL LOOKING FOR IN PEOPLE?
DHL Express employs potential leaders, team players, great communicators, logical thinkers, planners and, of course, people who always think of providing the best service levels for our customers. Standouts would be people with proven problem-solving skills who can talk about specific examples where they have demonstrated changes to improve a process or help a customer in a previous role.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SELF?
The advice I would give my former high school self is to seize every opportunity that comes your way and to always keep the communication open and honest with your peers and leaders. This has certainly helped me along with my 37-year journey with DHL. I am constantly learning even after all these years by looking further into challenges, participating in projects and speaking up on various issues and ideas.
